| After the impeachment of Pakistan's Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif by the Supreme Court on Friday, the ruling PML-N party has appointed its new candidate for office. The country's next prime minister is now expected to be Nawaz Sharif's younger brother, Shabaz Sharif (65), the outgoing PM said in a press conference. Shabaz Sharif still has to be formally elected in a parliamentary session. PML-N has a majority, so a smooth transfer of power is expected. Nawaz Sharif was dismissed Friday after a unanimous decision by five Supreme Court judges. The decision was related to documents that had surfaced with the international Panama Papers scandal. The papers contained names of Sharif's children, but not his own. The Süddeutsche Zeitung had received the Panama Papers from an anonymous source, thousands of pages of documents from the Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca on hidden assets and letterbox companies, which evaluated the SZ together with journalists of the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ). Together with around 80 media worldwide, the machinations of Mossack Fonseca were unveiled in April 2016. In the wake of the Panama Papers revelations, Iceland's Prime Minister Sigmundur Gunnlaugsson stepped down, as did several ministers in various countries and a member of the Fifa Ethics Committee. Shahbaz Sharif is the younger brother of Nawaz and currently head of government of the country's largest province, Punjab, which has more than 100 million inhabitants and is the power base of the Sharif clan. His election guarantees the continuation of Nawaz Sharif's policy. To become prime minister, he must first become a member of parliament. That's why there will be an interim prime minister: former Minister of Petroleum and Natural Resources, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, a long-time confidant of Nawaz Sharif. DISPLAY Shabaz Sharif is known as a competent administrator. In Punjab, where he is chief minister for the third time, he has implemented major infrastructure projects and education and health programs. He should also have good relations with the powerful military. The public knows about two wives, there are rumors about further marriages. Polygamy is allowed in Pakistan, but not undisputed. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
