How teachers decide which standard a child has attained?
4
The standards have been rewritten (where possible) to make them easier to understand. It is expected that if a student has
achieved one of the criteria then they will be able to explain it to someone else. So if you are not sure what something
means then just ask your child.

Identity next steps Support students to identify next stepsNote

Attend workshops and practise the skill or knowledgeTeach student the skill or knowledge and allow opportunities to practise1. Not all of the criteria in the National Standards have equal weighting. Some are just identifying and recall while others require more higher order thinking
13
Collect evidence that they can transfer the skill or knowledge to different contextsCommunicate what evidence is needed to achieve a criteria2. If your child is aiming for the Year 7 or 9 standard, they only need to complete half of the criteria. Year 6, 8 or 10 need to complete the whole thing
14
Evaluate evidence to ensure validity
15
16
Students will typically achieve a criteria through two main avenues
17
1. Answering multiple questions correctly on a standardised test
18
2. Learning through multiple lessons and being able to use the skill/strategy in different contexts
