10/31/20214:19 PMMrP & V5Arrival/Perching/DepartureV5 continues to perch on the Balcony Branch at 4:19 pm. Ah, this is a treat indeed but we are about to be the lucky recipients of one sweet treat more. The handsome MrP flies in to join the lovely V5 at 4:39 pm. How sweet it is to hear the greeting they share as he cozies up beside her. How sweet it is to see them enjoy each other’s company as they perch side by side. Could a Halloween treat get any sweeter than this? Who needs candy when you have a visit from MrP and V5? They remain here together for almost two hours before MrP flies over to the LV branch for a quick nest check at 6:12 pm. He departs at 6:13 pm with V5 sweetly following behind him.earlybird_AEF

10/30/20217:13 AMMrPArrival/Perching/DepartureThe weather has much improved. The Arboretum had quite a deluge of rain yesterday, most likely the reason why we didn’t see hide or feather of MrP and V5. No doubt our two beauties were hunkered down in a safe and secure place. It’s another windy morning but the rain has moved out of the area at least for the moment. An unidentified eagle flies into the NW area at 7:13 am. MrP flies in from another direction and lands on the NW branch with vocals less than twenty seconds later. He keeps watch but five minutes more before he flies out of view at 7:19 am. We find an eagle perched on the Parking Lot Perch tree at 7:39 am. What a gorgeous picture he makes with the sun rising behind him. Could that be MrP? We believe it is but from this distance we can’t be sure. The eagle departs from his perch at 7:48 am.earlybird_AEF

10/28/20216:08 PMV5Arrival/Perching/DepartureV5 stops by for a quick nest check at 6:08 pm. She hops over to the Lateral branch, feaks her beak and departs at 6:10 pm. But wait! Not so fast. She doesn’t fly off for the night just yet. She lands on the NW branch and scans the skies before flying off and disappearing in the trees at 6:13 pm.earlybird_AEF

10/27/202112:02 PMMrP & V5Arrival/Perching/DepartureMrP lands in the nest at 12:02 pm and he too doesn’t seem to think the nest is in need of any work right now. Or perhaps he too just wants to enjoy this beautiful day. He hops over to the Lateral branch, sidesteps down to the end and feaks his beak at 12:03 pm. V5 tracks his flight as he arrives but she doesn’t move from her nice comfy spot. They remain on their separate branches basking in the golden sun until they both fly off with MrP in the lead at 1:12 pm.earlybird_AEF

10/27/202111:13 AMV5Arrival/PerchingV5 flies through the trees, makes a quick pit stop on the LV branch and hops down to the nest at 11:13 am. She surveys the nest and evidently decides that she doesn’t need to do any nest work right now. She did tidy up quite a bit this morning after all. Why not kick back and enjoy some of this beautiful day. That’s exactly what she does. V5 hops over to the Lateral branch and up to perch on the Balcony branch to enjoy the view at 11:14 am.earlybird_AEF

10/27/20217:10 AMMrP & V5Arrival/Nest Work/Perching/DepartureV5 arrives and delivers the first stick of the day at 7:10 am. Very impressive V5! “Stickwoman” indeed. She tidies up the nest, no doubt hoping to impress MrP with her tidiness, before she wingwalks up the RV branch at 7:17 am. V5 barely reaches her perch before MrP arrives and checks out the nest, no doubt duly impressed with V5’s workmanship. He moves just one stick before he marches up on the LV branch at 7:19 am. V5 takes off and soars around through the trees at 7:22 am. Is she looking for another stick, we wonder? If so, she doesn’t return with it, perhaps she decided to go get some breakfish instead. MrP continues to watch over his Stickdom from the LV branch looking gorgeous with the sky in layers of gold and periwinkle blue as his backdrop. He departs at 7:30 am, perhaps he decided to join the lovely V5.earlybird_AEF

10/26/20211:05 PMV5Perching/DepartureV5 branch hops up to the Balcony Branch almost “slip sliding away” in the process because of the very gusty winds at 1:05 pm. No worries for V5. She’s got this. She remains on her perch for just thirteen minutes more before she flies off with the wind at 1:18 pm.earlybird_AEF

10/26/202112:28 PMV5Arrival/Nest Work/Perching V5 arrives with a stick in her beak at 12:28 pm. A small stick to be sure but any and all sticks are appreciated when it comes to renovating the nest. Nicely done V5. She fiddles around with her much appreciated stick for but a minute or two before hopping over to the Lateral branch at 12:30 pm.earlybird_AEF

10/26/20217:16 AMMrP & V5Arrival/Perching/DepartureV5 announces her arrival when she lands in the nest at 7:16 am. Could she be calling the handsome MrP? It appears that the answer is yes. MrP briefly joins her in the nest at 7:21 am before hopping over to the Lateral branch at 7:22 am. V5 tidies up the nest just a bit before she joins him at 7:23 am. MrP has a few sweet things to say to the lovely V5 but apparently, she’s not in the mood for romance at the moment. They continue to perch together quietly enjoying each other’s company before V5 flies off with MrP following close behind at 7:34 am.earlybird_AEF

10/26/20215:05 AMGreat Horned OwlArrival/Perching/DepartureWhoo has long earlike tufts, an intimidating yellow-eyed stare and a deep hooting voice? And whoo lands on the LV branch at 5:05 am? Yes, a Great Horned Owl has stopped by for yet another visit. S/he peers out into the darkness and has a few things to say as s/he flits from one perch to the other ultimately flying off from the LV branch at 5:11 am. Hoot! Hoot! Hoot! The chatty GHO continues with her/his conversation off in the distance at 6:26 am.earlybird_AEF

10/25/20215:22 PMV5Arrival/Nest Work/DepartureV5 circles around the nest at 5:22 pm. Looking for the perfect stick V5? MrP has taught you well. She quickly delivers that perfect stick and just as quickly finds the perfect spot for it. Stickman would be proud. "Stickwoman" wingwalks up the RV branch and scans the skies before flying off at 5:28 pm. 😊earlybird_AEF

10/25/20217:09 AMMrP & V5Arrival/Nest Work/DepartureMrP flies in with the wind and lands on the Lateral branch at 7:09 am. The handsome MrP watches over his Stickdom and takes care of some preening in anticipation of the lovely V5’s arrival. Or so we hope. He scans the skies and tracks an eagle flying by at 7:17 am. Could it be… Yes! MrP quickly joins V5 when she lands in the nest just seconds later. MrP attempts to do some nest work but gets just a bit distracted by V5’s sweet neck nibbles. MrP doesn’t appear to think they’re all that sweet. He gives her a peck and says no thank you but apparently V5 finds MrP’s fluffy feathers just too hard to resist. MrP hightails it up the RV branch at 7:20 am after V5 tugs sweetly on his tailfeathers. Just a gentle tug to be sure but not at all appreciated by MrP at the moment. Sometimes the much younger V5 can be quite a “talonful”. Hilarious! V5 briefly moves over to the Lateral branch at 7:22 am but quickly returns to the nest at 7:24 am, perhaps hoping that MrP will join her so she can have another go at those tailfeathers. MrP is not falling for that one. He flies off towards the river with V5 following close behind at 7:25 am. “Wait for me Handsome!”earlybird_AEF

10/24/20216:28 PMV5Arrival/DepartureThe lovely V5 stops by for a lovely but brief visit at 6:28 pm. She lands in the nest and attempts to move a stick or two before wing walking up the LV branch and flying off at 7:31 pm.earlybird_AEF

10/24/20217:14 AMMrP & V5Arrival/Nest Work/Perching/DepartureMrP is the first to arrive in the nest with V5 following close behind at 7:14 am. MrP attempts to rearrange a stick or two with the help of V5 but the nest appears to be just a bit too small for the two of them. MrP moves up to perch between the V branches and surveys the situation before joining V5 in the nest again. Apparently, he hasn’t figured out his game plan yet. He moves up on the LV branch and gives it some more thought at 7:19 am while V5 works solo in the nest. MrP flies down and gives it another try at 7:25 am. He quickly moves back up on the LV branch after V5 gives him some love nibbles. MrP doesn’t appear to be in the mood for romance right now. He has other things on his mind. He flies off and returns with the first stick of the day at 7:32 am. The first of many, I might add. Ultimately, he adds four more sticks to the nest with V5 taking care of much of the rearranging before they both fly off at 8:22 am.earlybird_AEF

10/23/20212:23 AMGreat Horned OwlArrival/Perching/DepartureA shadow appears from out of the darkness and lands on the NW branch without a sound at 2:23 am. Whoo could it be? A Great Horned Owl has stopped by to pay us a visit once again. S/he flies over to the side rail perch at 2:24 am still without making a sound. S/he checks out her/his surroundings before hopping in the nest at 2:25 am. Hoo HooHoooooo HooHoo! Ah, now our night flyer has something to say. Our beauty continues with her/his conversation as s/he moves up to perch between the V branches and flies off at 2:26 am.earlybird_AEF

10/16/20219:12 AMMrPArrival/Perching/DepartureThe proverb “Absence makes the heart grow fonder” couldn’t be truer today. MrP has been away from the nest for ten long days now by my count and yes, I was counting... but much to our delight he has returned! The handsome MrP announces his arrival soon after he lands on the Balcony branch at 9:12 am. “Hello fans, I’m back!” The crowd roars with excitement (or is that the wind) as he watches over his Stickdom once again. We’re thrilled to have him back and even more thrilled to see him looking so well with his blaze shining for all the world to see. We enjoy every minute of his time with us before he flies off on this very windy morning at 10:28 am.earlybird_AEF

10/15/20214:52 AMGreat Horned OwlArrival/Perching/DepartureWhat a hoot to see a Great Horned Owl land on the NW branch at 4:52 am. This beauty doesn’t come empty handed. It appears that s/he has a small critter clenched in her/his talon. S/he peers out into the darkness and has more than a few things to say before hopping over to a branch nearby at 5:06 am. This beauty is wise enough to know that its best to depart from the premises before the resident eagles return. S/he flies off and disappears in the darkness still clutching her/his breakfast at 5:11 am.earlybird_AEF

10/12/202110:32 PMGreat Horned OwlArrival/Perching/DepartureHoot! Hoot! Hoot! A Great Horned Owl is not far away. S/he appears from out of the darkness and lands on the edge of the nest at 10:32 pm. The coast is clear. No eagles in sight. S/he hops in the nest and tidies up the bedding just a bit before moving over to the Lateral branch at 10:35 pm. Our lovely night visitor scans the skies and has a few things to say before flying back out into the darkness at 10:37 pm.earlybird_AEF
31
10/11/20216:00 PMV5Arrival/Nest Work/Perching/DepartureV5 arrives in the nest at promptly 6:00 pm and promptly gets to work on some sticks. She moves one here, she moves one there before making her way up the LV branch and over to the RV at 6:03 pm. The lovely V5 checks out her surroundings and with a bob of her head flies over to the Balcony branch at 6:04 pm. She quietly scans the skies before flying off towards the NW area at 6:24 pm.earlybird_AEF
32
10/8/20212:35 PMTwo EaglesPerching/DepartureAn eagle lands on the Balcony branch at 2:35 pm. Unfortunately, the shadows and the sun reflection through the trees make him or her impossible to identify. S/he appears to get a bit agitated and turns him/herself around to look in the other direction. Ah something is amiss. The eagle crouches down and scans the sky. Something is coming… Another eagle flies towards eagle number one like a rocket and gives him or her a private escort off the premises at 2:38 pm. There appears to be no contact at all but eagle number one clearly gets the message jumping high in the air and quickly disappearing from view while eagle number two flies off towards the LPPT area. One more fly by at 2:42 pm and all is calm and peaceful at the Arboretum once again.earlybird_AEF
33
10/5/20216:11 PMMrP & V5Arrival/Nest Work/DepartureMrP jumps up on the branch above Balcony and checks out the sky before flying over to the LV branch and hopping in the nest at 6:11 pm. What a nice surprise to see V5 join him at 6:12 pm. They work in the nest for just about a minute or so before they appear to have a slight disagreement. V5 is busy rearranging one of her old sprigs of greenery and apparently, she doesn’t want MrP’s help. MrP quickly gets the message when she gives him a peck for his trouble. MrP wasn’t born yesterday, he knows when his lady needs some space. He quickly hightails it up to perch between the V branches while V5 continues to work in the nest. V5 finishes up her work for the moment and flies off at 6:18 pm with MrP following soon after.earlybird_AEF
34
10/5/20213:59 PMMrPArrival/PerchingThe first five days of October have been very quiet at the DC nest. Neither MrP nor V5 have been here since the last day of September. Apparently, they’ve decided to extend their vacation a bit longer, as well they should. The eagle season for DC doesn’t begin until January so they have plenty of time to renovate the nest. The winds are brisk when MrP lands on the Balcony branch at 3:58 pm. Yes! MrP is back and looking mighty fine with a very ample crop. He appears very relaxed as he gazes out at his domain on this very windy afternoon.earlybird_AEF
