| 19/06/2017 21:43:00 PM | Philippe | Switzerland | Ecotourism program/Πρόγραμμα οικοτουρισμού | ***** | Thanks to TED for the very interesting tour we had, visiting all around Kalamos the forests and the various trees... a splendid and scientific afternoon we had !
| 17/07/2016 12:47:00 PM | Ann-Christin | Germany | Field volunteer program/Πρόγραμμα εθελοντών πεδίου | **** | The stay on Kalamos Island was really nice. It is a small island with a beautiful landscape. The sea is really clean, so you can see a huge amount of fish and other animals while snorkeling. The forest is magical and really quiet. There aren't living many people in the island but the ones who do are really kind. You can feel a bit isolated from the rest of the world and everything went a bit slower on Kalamos but I appreciated that. The Members of Terra Sylvestris are also very nice an helpful. Spending their life on protecting the gorgeos nature is a precious work which needs a lot of helping hands. They're doing a great job!
| 17/07/2017 14:37:00 PM | Nick | Australia | Other/Άλλο | ***** | I am very grateful to Ted Karfakis for giving me a half day tour of Kalamos and explaining the origins/purpose of the Kalamos/Kastos sustainability development project. I wish him and his team the best of luck in this important and greatly needed work.
| 22/07/2017 18:08:00 PM | Mailys | France | Field volunteer program/Πρόγραμμα εθελοντών πεδίου | **** | I had a great time in Kalamos, I discovered the Island and all its wildlife and participated into different projects such as birds or posedonias surveys. Ted was a great host, he told me a lot of stories about the island and made sure I had everything I needed for my stay there. I recommend this experience with Terrasylvestris to anyone who wants to help protecting an ecosystem and wants to discover a beautiful Greek island.
| 10/09/2017 8:00:00 AM | Annie | USA | Field volunteer program/Πρόγραμμα εθελοντών πεδίου | ***** | I participated in Terra Sylvestris’s marine monitoring field research program in June 2017, where I worked closely with Ted to monitor seagrass populations and better understand the impact of nearby fish farming operations on the health and vitality of this endangered species. This experience was not only academically/professionally enriching but also gave me the opportunity to learn about European environmental policy—all while living and working in one of the most beautiful islands in the world. Ted was extremely accommodating- he helped me navigate my way to the remote island and provided detailed background research and logistics information ahead of time to make my journey safe and easy. Once there, I stayed in the field volunteer research station which is equipped with bunk beds, a functioning kitchen, and everything you would need. Ted supervised my research and was kind enough to make frequent trips to nearby cities to purchase important research materials and whatever else I needed. Ted is extremely knowledgeable about Kalamos ecology and I learned so much from his explanations about the island’s flora and fauna and the political context of environmental policy in Europe and Greece specifically. He is a great resource and is very enthusiastic and open to new ideas from volunteers. I would highly recommend this program to anyone interested in some hands-on field research experience where you will learn about the unique flora and fauna in Kalamos, better understand how Greek NGOs function and operate, and cutting-edge and important research to the cause of environmental protection and stewardship. Thanks, Ted for the amazing opportunity!
| 26/11/2017 11:51:00 PM | ana | chile | Field volunteer program/Πρόγραμμα εθελοντών πεδίου | ***** | My time as a volunteer in Terrasylvestris was one of the most beautiful and enriching experiences of my life. The program achieves a balance between work, learning, and sense of purpose and freedom (time to relax, meditate and enjoy the island). This combination allows for a deeper understanding and feeling for the island as an entity which is almost alive and breathing, and therefore work is accomplished not merely with an abstract sense of doing good, but with a personalized intention: commitment to the island of Kalamos and its issues. Ted was a wonderful host, conversations with him were always illuminating about the history of the island and about the different dangers that prey on Kalamos which we try to neutralize with our work. The field station has everything that at least I ever needed, hi speed wifi, a kitchen, a bed, a fire and a beautiful view!!! I especially enjoyed the hammocks and the garden. The work as such is interesting, engaging and allows space for creativity and inventively and I enjoyed it very much. All in all an experience I will always remember very dearly and one I totally recommend.
| 10/01/2018 10:05:00 AM | Tongxin | China | Field volunteer program/Πρόγραμμα εθελοντών πεδίου | **** | I have stayed with The Terra Sylvestris team for half months and I got so much. Kalamos is a unknown but super beautiful island with olive trees and bush on land as well as blue-green coastal line and marine organism in water. We not only had cave experience by boat and on foot, but also enjoyed great time together with others, watching documentary and sharing ideas. | Photos |
| 16/01/2018 17:47:00 PM | Johannes | Belgium | Field volunteer program/Πρόγραμμα εθελοντών πεδίου | **** | Hi! I had a great time at Kalamos. The team was very nice and it was a pleasure to meet other volunteers from around the world. It was a pleasure to participate in the volunteer program (data collection for birds, feral cats and monk seals). The island is beautiful (even in winter) with al lot of different areas to discover (woods, mountain, shrub, sea, beaches, village,..). Caring for the ecosystem in the purest and simplest wat, great experience.
| 26/02/2018 18:00:00 PM | Katherine | United States of America | Field volunteer program/Πρόγραμμα εθελοντών πεδίου | **** | This was a wonderful experience which taught me a lot about not only what goes into scientific field research but also about how conservation works in the world today. Ted is extremely knowledgeable about all aspects of conservation, especially about natural history of not only Greece but Europe as a whole.
| 08/10/2019 12:09:00 AM | Stanislas | Belgium | Internship program/Πρόγραμμα πρακτικής άσκησης | **** | I have been working as an intern for Terra Sylvestris for three months in spring 2019. I took part in the bird monitoring and Mediterranean Monk Seal programmes. This internship provided me new practical knowledge in the field of monitoring wildlife. This was an interesting and important work regarding the biodiversity situation and its threats in the area.
| 19/10/2019 14:01:00 PM | Damien | Belgium | Field volunteer program/Πρόγραμμα εθελοντών πεδίου | **** | "I learned a lot of things during my stay in Kalamos. The first was that sometimes the running water is out of service ! Life on a small island can be challenging if you're used to the comfort of big cities, but you will eventually adapt. All in all, Kalamos has a lot of commodities for such a small island such as supermarkets, restaurants, cocktail bars, a doctor, ... The people of Kalamos are quite friendly as well. I recommend learning the basics of Greek, it always brings smiles from the locals. Ted is the head of the center and the person that will guide you in the work to be done. He is quite flexible on the tasks he will assign and always made sure to ask if I was okay with my assignments before giving them. I also met Georgia, another member who works with the logistics aspects of the center. She's very helpful and caring, I hope you get to meet her ! Where the island shines most is in the nature/population ratio. You could stay for a week on most parts of the island and see no one. This makes for great expeditions on land, amazing underwater life (compared to other places in the Mediterranean), and afternoons spent alone on the beach. Life does have a smaller pace here. I found it quite relaxing to spend a month taking things calmly and getting some good work done. And on the topic of good work, you will certainly learn how to do it here. You will learn about the constrains of *actual* fieldwork and how to go about them. More than techniques, I learned how to accommodate for situations, something you can only learn on the field. On the whole, I was afraid on spending a month alone stuck on a island living with people I didn't know but I ended up making good friends and leaving a bit of myself on that island."
| 20/08/2020 12:01:49 PM | Ceccilia | Italy | Field volunteer program/Πρόγραμμα εθελοντών πεδίου | ***** | I have been working as volunteer for Terra Sylvestris for two weeks in summer 2020. I took part in the Mediterranean Monk Seal programs. This was a wonderful experience which taught me a lot about how conservation works. Life on a small island can be challenging if you're used to the comfort of big cities, but Kalamos is a unknown and beautiful island with olive trees on land and blue-green coastal line. We enjoyed great time together with others.
| 20/08/2020 12:45:00 PM | Ambra | Italy | Field volunteer program/Πρόγραμμα εθελοντών πεδίου | **** | My experience in Kalamos was truly formative. I participated in the monitoring program for two weeks in August, unfortunately this year due to covid-19 we were a small group of 4 girls but this did not have a negative effect. From an academic point of view I was able to learn more about monitoring and the issues surrounding it, and certainly the beautiful landscapes of Kalamos and Kastos were a great setting!
| 19/10/2020 15:40:00 PM | Niklas | Germany | Field volunteer program/Πρόγραμμα εθελοντών πεδίου | **** | My time in Kalamos, with Ted, Georgia and the other volunteers was a great experience! I got friends for life, got more knowledge about the ecosystems and the nature, how important and also difficult it is to protect it and also I improved my greek. It was very interesting to work and help in such an unique and beautiful enviroment. The information and the introduction we got were very interesting and very helpful. Especially I liked the bird sound recording and the trip to Kastos, were we searched for caves. It was a pleasure to contribute my time to the project. It is an amazing place and I would love to come back and contribute my help again.
| 06/03/2021 22:40:00 PM | Valentin | Germany | Field volunteer program/Πρόγραμμα εθελοντών πεδίου | **** | I stayed at Terra Sylvestris for 3 months from February to May. I was very happy to find a volunteering program during covid and beeing able to escape a little bit. I enjoyed my life on the Island and was happy to explore all its corners and get to know the residents. Overall I realy enjoyed my stay.Sometimes I felt like there were so many great things you could possibly do with the project, but unfortunately there was not too much going on. Though this might have also just been the case due to Covid. Overall I think I had an amazing time at Terra Sylvestris
| 17/09/2021 11:27:00 AM | Isabelle | United Kingdom | Field volunteer program/Πρόγραμμα εθελοντών πεδίου | ***** | Overall the program was very enjoyable and provided valuable experience regarding the process of undertaking field work. It was very interesting to learn about the type of devices used to help monitor the environment of Kalamos as well as the environmental context of the island.
| 16/11/2021 8:11:11 PM | Phillip | Austria | Field volunteer program/Πρόγραμμα εθελοντών πεδίου | **** | I learned a little about field studies and had a good time with the other volunteers and with Ted/Georgia
| 09/03/2022 11:05:00 AM | Jacqueline | Netherlands | Field volunteer program/Πρόγραμμα εθελοντών πεδίου | **** | Last February, I volunteered at the biological field station in Kalamos for four weeks. My tasks included bird monitoring, vegetation monitoring in pine forests, and installing camera traps. I was able to meet nine enthusiastic fellow volunteers and learn from the ecologist and volunteer coordinator Ted Karfakis. It was a wonderful experience and another confirmation of my passion for working outside. I would love to come back someday!

| 28/09/2022 12:00:00 PM | Lara | Germany | Field volunteer program/Πρόγραμμα εθελοντών πεδίου | **** | I learned a lot at Terra Sylvestris: you not only get an insight into the work of a biologist and the collecting of data, you also meet amazing volunteers from all over the world and benefit from their experiences and perspectives regarding environmental issues and life in general. Ted is always there to answer questions. He expects commitment and motivation of the volunteers, though there is still plenty of time to relax and discover the beautiful, calm island. Also Georgia is amazing and takes care of the volunteers very well. Another great possibility: you can go to the Camp on the islands Kastos, where you live directly at a bay. I just wished, that I could had the possibility to analyze and evaluate the collected data, but I think this depends on the time one is staying. To sum it up: I am thankful for the time I spent there and learned a lot on various levels :) | https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fo/djubjtovonzgjtx9uwxa7/h?dl=0&rlkey=j2frrc1bb6pzb4bg16l9msex3 |
| 30/09/2022 2:30:00 PM | Chris | USA | Field volunteer program/Πρόγραμμα εθελοντών πεδίου | ***** | My time spent in Kalamos & Kastos was both fun-filled & educational. Ted and Georgia were amazing, and I value my new friendships with people around the world. It was a pleasure to learn about field techniques and volunteer in a biodiverse hotspot. Kastos was beautiful as well! Thank you for having me in the program. All the best,
| 09/12/2022 4:30:00 PM | Max | Germany | Field volunteer program/Πρόγραμμα εθελοντών πεδίου | ***** | From January to April 2022 I was at the field station on Kallamos for four months. My work mainly consisted of measuring trees, marking them, registering them, and documentation with photos. For me, working in the garden was a lot of fun but also a lot of physical work. It's amazing with how much enthusiasm, ideas and love the Director of Executive works in his garden. Besides, the beautiful lemon tree and the banana plants remain in good memory. I also edited various photos of endangered animal species and had to enter them into the system via an Exel. I was also on the neighboring island and had the opportunity to do practical work there and even set up a new camera in a cave there and set up a camp. This was a highlight, even for my life. The island as such is an example of beauty, wilderness, and often untouched nature. The old and partly newer forest, which differs greatly on both sides of the island, is beautiful. It is not unusual to see large birds there, hear a woodpecker or see other small animals such as snakes. Ted's house is generally furnished and functional. The participants must demonstrate a high level of self-discipline and be communicative, curious and self-confident. In winter we were an average of ten people, which at the time could be very tight, but on the other hand, working with this special team was always pleasant, team-conscious and also organizationally flawless. For all participants, I always recommend researching their own strengths and then pursuing them and always asking questions. Ted's love for the island is unparalleled, showing a deep childhood imprint and selfless work for this beautiful little Mediterranean island. I would also like to point out how incredibly helpful the other worker it is. She is an amazing team member is an important link who, my deepest respect, is always busy with his work. The team reacts promptly when there are problem. But like everywhere, you need to speak up. I can only recommend everyone to discover the island on their own, because nowadays it is really very rare to find a place that is largely free of people. Overall the experience was positive throughout. At this point I would like to thank you again for the wonderful Easter celebrations and I wish Ted all the best in his work in a world that is driven by money, power and an amount destruction of a world that will never exist like that again. Kind Regards

But at the end I was so sad to leave. It really was one of the best experience of my life. I can't believe it already has been 6 weeks, time past so fast. Ted is really doing a great and a very important job there. He is really good at it, sometimes a bit stressed but I guess it's normal when you are doing so much. He is doing so much to protect the island, the species there, the environment, etc, I really wish you good luck and keep up the fight! The place is really nice and calm, the people I met there are awesome and my last word goes to Georgia who really made me feel at home, she is one of the kindest person I've ever met. Thank you again for everything and I wish you the best for the future! Micahit

The location was perfect as everything could be done on foot and the small island with multiple villages including the ghost town, Porto Leone, allowed for a lot of adventuring and hikes.. The presentation evening where everyone presented their studies or their inspirations was definitely one of the more valuable and enriching moments to me.

| 02/09/2023 17:56:00 PM | Luca | United Kingdom | Field volunteer program/Πρόγραμμα εθελοντών πεδίου | ***** | Choosing to stay at the Kalamos Island field station for a month was one of the best decisions I have made for a long time! Despite the fact that the organisation was recovering from a period of difficulty due to the heatwaves that had ravaged the Mediterranean over the summer, my experience was one of learning and discovery. Not only was the island itself beautiful (hikes up the mountain recommended, but bring plenty of water!), the people were friendly and accommodating, and I made friendships that I hope will last me a lifetime. I spent the vast majority of my time on the island working on the seagrass ecosystem monitoring project ran by the organisation, and as an undergraduate student with a passion for gaining experience in real field work that makes a difference, I cannot recommend the program highly enough!

Good availability carried out by great variety carried out by Ted. I had a good time with the group, willing and available companions from all over Europe (for the period in which I was there), thank you very much for this experience which I will probably repeat. I really appreciate the work that Ted is carrying out, I hope that it will get better and better in the future and above all that awareness regarding the environment will become increasingly important

| 18/06/2024 | Thalia | France | Field volunteer program/Πρόγραμμα εθελοντών πεδίου | **** | I had a great time in Terra Sylvestris, with a perfect balance between work and rest. The work is physically hard but in a beautiful and small island and there is no specific knowledge to have. I participated in the bird monitoring and the camera trapping for monk seals, it was like adventures and hikes. And of course I helped gardening. We learned things about permaculture and the island community. You can enjoy the beach everyday after your morning work! Thanks Ted

| 23/6/2025 | Spain | Field volunteer program/Πρόγραμμα εθελοντών πεδίου | **** | I am an engineer trying to shift my career to conservation and ecology. I spent almost three weeks volunteering at the biological station in Kalamos, which I believe is a short period of time to see all the activities and impact of the work done there but enough to understand the dynamics, values and structure of Terras Sylvestris. It has been a unique opportunity to live immersed in a place of extraordinary natural beauty and ecological richness, and to contribute to conservation efforts in a small but meaningful way. Regarding the activities during my stage, one of the aspects I most appreciated was the chance to participate in a range of monitoring activities, such as bird and seagrass observation in the field, as well as the preparation for monk seal monitoring (as I didn’t have time to see the next steps). These activities allowed me to gain hands-on experience and apply ecological concepts in the field, which was very enriching. Additionally, contributing to the data analysis, together with my peers there and the data analyst, added value to the work and gave me a sense of purpose, continuity and a better understanding of the whole context. On the work organisation and structure, volunteers were encouraged to self-organise as a team. This flexibility fostered collaboration and allowed each of us to explore our strengths and learn from one another. It was particularly rewarding to share time and tasks with volunteers from around the world. I learned a great deal from them. During the stay, I had time to self-learn about the ecological topics we were working on. The workload varied depending on the flow of volunteers and available resources, and I had several days off as a result. The experience is designed to offer variety rather than repetition, and I appreciated that.In conclusion, I take with me some knowledge and deep appreciation for the ecosystem, and personal learning about how I want to contribute to environmental work in the future as well as grateful connections with other volunteers. Eventually, I wish the team of Terras Sylvestris all the best and good luck in their future challenges and ongoing projects.
| 22/01/2026 | Aron | Germany | Field volunteer program/Πρόγραμμα εθελοντών πεδίου | **** | I stayed for 2 months on Kalamos and had a great time. Due to the duration of my stay, I met lots of different people that came and left, wich brought an intense social development for me. Next to this, there was lots of time to discover the little Island during and after work, which we enjoyed. I was lucky to visit two other islands as a part of my work for terra sylvestris in the ionian sea and to learn something about the regional problems regarding external investments, commercial fishing and tourism. There's time to persue one's own interest, so bring commitment to shape your time on the island.
| 02/02/2026 | Gregor | Germany | Field volunteer program/Πρόγραμμα εθελοντών πεδίου | **** | I had a great time in Kalamos. With no scientific background, the others quickly introduced me into the different field works.Almost every day we went out in nature, which means up getting early. This leaves time to explore the island, go to the beach or stay in the cosy field station with wood fire. . So I feel lucky to have met these people and discovered the wonders of Kalamos.
| 04/02/2026 | Franziska | Germany | Field volunteer program/Πρόγραμμα εθελοντών πεδίου | **** | I spent three weeks at Terra Sylvestris in Kalamos over the New Year and had a very good time overall. In addition to the volunteer work, I was able to really slow down there. Ted and his family made me feel very welcome. My team was also a great fit on a personal level. We worked well together, laughed a lot and created a great atmosphere. All in all, I was able to learn a lot both theoretically and practically and also find perfect peace and quiet.
| 05/02/2026 | Christopher | USA | Field volunteer program/Πρόγραμμα εθελοντών πεδίου | ***** | Spending a month with Terra Sylvestris on Kalamos was an unforgettable experience. The work felt meaningful, the research was hands-on and inspiring, and the people created a genuinely supportive, welcoming community. I learned so much about conservation, wildlife, and living closely with nature, and I left feeling connected, motivated, and deeply grateful.Thank you so much for the opportunity to work with you this past month, it was an incredible experience! |
