GEMS Overview: Constellations, Optics & Lunar Eclipse 1/11/19 10AM - 2PM
2
10:00 - 10:15Intro: What are stars? Why do we only see them sometimes? Why do we only see the moon sometimes too?
3
10:15 - 10:30Rotation #1: The Super Blood Wolf Moon Lunar Eclipse: Revisit why eclipses happen. Create a model of an eclipse using Earth ball, light source and a kiddo as a moon. Discuss why the moon will take on a red color for this lunar eclipse. Use prisms to illustrate how earth's atmosphere creates the "blood" red color for this lunar eclipse.
4
10:30 - 11:15Rotation #2: Star light, star bright! Why do some stars have a different color? Why do stars appear to twinkle in the sky? Why are some brighter than others? How far away are they anyway? Use prisms to explore white light. Move to spectrometers. Then explore other light sources and look at the difference. Discuss how different stars have different compositions that we can determine from far away by their light signature.
5
11:15 - 12:00Star Wheel: Create your own Star Wheel, showing the constellations that are visible at different times of the year. Why can we only see certain ones at certain times?
6
12:00 - 12:30Lunch: Constellation Myths- Learn about what ancient people thought the constellations represented.
7
12:30 - 1:00 Rotation #3: Person Constellation: Use your name to create your own personal constellation. What would your myth be? Write and share if time allows.
8
1:00 - 2:00Closing Project: Make a Light-up Constellation!: Choose your favorite constellation and create a lit-up version to take home and hang up!
