BUGS
12
Early BugButterfly mon preferableBug Pokemon are usually offered to the player from early to mid game as a way to get a fully evolved Pokemon at an early stage. Some rarer/stronger types are found later. Generally they are found in forest or field environments unless they are unusual - such as Joltic being in Chargestone Cave, a version of the Power Plant environment. Earlier bugs tend to be slightly more orthodox than those found later where they can be potentially any combination.

BIRDS
24
Early BirdGenerally large birdsLike bug types, bird Pokemon are usually offered to the player from an early stage. The main difference is they may be offered up to a later stage as well. Generally the first bird offered to the player is normal/flying, though it doesn't have to be strictly adhered to. Later bird types also cover a number of dual-typings and niches. They can be found in a variety of areas, though normally in field and mountainous areas.

RODENTS
33
Early RodentAlways two stageRodents are offered to the player at an early stage and are designed to be robust "all-rounders". Usually these will be the go-to Pokemon for learning HM moves and save the player's other Pokemon from having to learn them. Rodents can be found all throughout the game, though normally more to annoy the player in fields, forests and caves. More than one type is offered to the player, although they may be more helpful in battle or cute in appearance. Pikaclones are rather straight forward and can appear early to mid game.

FIELD/MOUNTAIN
40
Early FieldEarly reliable monPokemon found in the field (or on mountains) can cover a huge variety of types. However, the ones first offered to the player are usually very reliable and may cover a typing that will aid in the first gym or so. Ones offered later may also have this same feature or else simply cover a variety of typings and designs not seen before. These Pokemon can be found throughout the game from early to late. There is no real pattern to them and share all kinds of niches.

MISC - FIELD
52
Normal TypeSometimes found early on2 or 3-stage Normal types have been a general staple of most Pokemon games, though this seems to have been changed recently due to the inclusion of the fairy type. Most seem to be found in fields as easy to rare offerings. These miscellaneous niches are interesting, but not entirely required. Sometimes they are included more as an oddity or to add flavour to the game. It is recommended that a fairy type be included in PokeAus.

TOKEN TYPES
64
Fighting Type2 or 3-stage FighterFighting types are a staple of the Pokemon games, though there is not a great variety of them. Fighting types are generally found all throughout the game serving many purposes. Sometimes they are there to provide a challenge to or annoy players in caves. However, fighting types generally give the player a physical powerhouse mon able to take on a number of situations. Fighting types also provide the opportunity for experimentation with dual-typings.

Psychic Type2 or 3-stage PsychicLike fighting types, psychics do not have a grand variety. They serve to offer as a special powerhouse able to take on a number of opponents. They are not usually played quite as "annoying" like fighting types, but they can prove challenging to capture. Unlike fighting types, they can be found in a number of locations - though they may sometimes be found where fighters are.

Grass Type2 or 3-stage GrassGrass types have always been iconic part of each game. They can be found at a number of times throughout the game, though they are more often found in forests and fields. More rarely they may be found in deserts. Grass types are not always popular for long-term use in games, so it may be worth trying to find a new niche.

FRESHWATER
83
FreshwaterSometimes found on landWater Pokemon have always been in abudance in all games. They are almost too well-represented, however. Freshwater Pokemon do overlap a fair bit with Ocean types, particularly when it comes to fishing. Ones found on land are generally created as an early water type to obtain before fishing becomes available to the player. As more recent games have explored though, not every Pokemon found in the water is a water type. Some freshwater types may also show up in caves as well.

OCEAN
95
Common Surfing MonProlific/annoying rateSome games tend to have more Ocean-based Pokemon than others, so not all spots may need to be filled. Surfing the oceans can prove to be a somewhat frustrating affair though, not unlike exploring a cave (even worse if a cave is along the route, however). Some ocean types can be found on islands or in caves, but not often. And fishing can also bring up a lot of rare surprises from the deep.
