Data Source: West Virginia Health Statistics Center, Vital Statistics System, Drug Overdose Database, June 13, 2018.
66
Notes:
67
1) These data include all manners of drug overdose deaths including accidents, suicides, homicides, and those of undetermined intent.
68
Technically, this includes all deaths coded to an underlying cause of ICD-10 X40-X44 (accidents) , X60-X64 (suicides), X85 (homicides), Y10-Y14 (undetermined intent).
69
2) These data reflect deaths that occurred in West Virginia and contain no information regarding deaths to West Virginia residents in other states.
70
3) Due to the fact that most drug overdose deaths involve multiple substances (polypharmacy), any individual death may involve multiple types of drugs.
71
As such, overdose deaths presented that involve one particular drug are rarely mutually exclusive from other overdose deaths, e.g., a death
72
that may be heroin-related may also be a death that is hydrocodone-related (or alprazolam-related, or oxycodone-related, etc.).
73
Because of this, the columns above for individual drugs will not total across to the "All opiate-related" or "All Drug Overdose" columns.
74
4) The figures above are from an analysis completed on June 13, 2018. The information is compiled from causes of death
75
as reported on death certificates certified by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. There is a significant time delay in-between an overdose death
76
and the filing of the death certificate with a cause of death, primarily due to the necessary time delay in obtaining toxicology results.
77
There are additional delays for reporting to the Health Statistics Center and for keying and coding and incorporation into statistical files.
78
5) *2001 is final data.
79
6) **Fentanyl-related deaths include those from pharmaceutical fentanyl and illicit fentanyl and its analogues.
80
7) Death counts between 1 and 4 are suppressed and listed as "1-4".
