My name is Matt Baker. You can reach me at matt.baker.83@gmail.com

The following document is intended to act as a resource for teachers new to teaching a subject.
7
Anyone that has ever taught a class knows that how you phrase a statement, and the vocabulary you use, can make a huge difference.
8
For example, the two angles below could be referred to as a "big angle" and a "small angle", but we know they're both 90 degrees

18
But kids won't see these two angles as the same, they will think the "bigger" angle actually has a larger measure.
19
These are the kinds of misconceptions this project is aiming to tell other teachers about before they get to class.
20
If you were teaching this during class, you might realize this mistake after teaching it first period and fix it for third period.
21
Or worse, realize it during third and have to go back to clarify for first. We want to try to avoid some of that.
22
23
This spreadsheet has been broken into Tabs for different areas of Math. Elementary and Middle School each have a tab.
24
And then there's a tab for different high school subjects. (If you would like more tabs, send me an email.)
25
I added some sample topics, they are not meant to be comprehensive, just a starting point for people.
26
27
Feel free to add topics that you are teaching in the future and looking for misconceptions on.
28
Also feel free to add misconceptions you've encountered even if you don't know a way around them.

A COUPLE OF NOTES
31
1) Entries should include the following:
- What the subject is (i.e. Measuring angles, combining like terms, etc)
- What the misconception is, what you shouldn't say (i.e. Big angle/Small Angle)
- What you should say instead, or some strategies for addressing the misconception
- A short explanation if you want to provide more information
- Your contact info in case someone wants to get more information about it
32
2) I would like this to be used as a quick reference. Try for brevity in the first two columns so it's easy to read.
33
3) Eventually entries will be added to a well-designed website. I just have to make that website first.
34
4) Don't delete another person's entry!!. If you disagree, make a comment on it or contact the person directly to have a conversation
35
5) I will try to keep this organized, but I would appreciate your help. Alphabetical by topic work for everyone?
36
6) Any comments or feedback can be sent to matt.baker.83@gmail.com and I will try to respond as fast as I can.
