*A slow normal walking speed is about 3 kms an hour. This is a speed that you lets you tackle gentle hills without becoming short of breath of becoming tired even when carrying a lot.

5–6 kms an hour is usually typical of a fit person who wants to get somewhere quickly. Most fit hikers will maintain this speed for gentle slopes but usually end up puffing for more difficult hills.

Google Maps assumes a 5 kms an hour walking speed, which is not that realistic for most people especially when you are new to an area and keeping a lookout around you + caryying heavy backpack.

What to do in case of emergency:
58
59
MINOR DIFFICULTIES
60
Minor injury/illness
61
Begin your first aid procedures, consider the need for shelter.
If necessary ask passers-by for help. Shout and/or whistle for help.
Phone and text your supervisor. Consider moving a short distance if you need to find mobile reception. Pass on the following information:
The time and your location
The nature of any injuries and who is injured.
What you’re doing or planning to do.
Wait if possible, in signal, until your supervisor is able to confirm your message and give further instructions.
62
63
Hopelessly Lost
64
Retrace your steps to a known location.
Ask passers-by for help.
If it's getting dark and you still do not know, try to call and text your supervisor.
65
66
Delayed or missed a bit of route
67
Text your supervisor with the time and your current location if you know you are completely off the route or missed part of the route.
68
69
MAJOR DIFFICULTY
70
Serious injury/illness/danger
71
Do the same as for Minor Injuries but CONTACT EMERGENCY BEFORE YOUR SUPERVISOR.
Call 112 or 155
Follow their prompts but remember to give them your supervisor’s number
Call and text your Supervisor or other staff.
72
73
There is no need to contact staff from your school or other organisation, parents or others at home. This could generate unnecessary worry, spread misleading information and tie up your phone/drain phone batteries while our staff or Emergency are trying to coordinate your help. Our staff will handle all communications.
