Welcome to the audition document for Emerald High School Bands and Orchestras for the 2026-2027 school year!

Audition Due Dates:
12/19/25 Level 3 Auditions For Current EHS Students (See Canvas);
12/19/25 Level 3 Classes For Students who are not currently in an EHS music class (See Google Classroom);
12/26/25 For All Level 2 Auditions (See Canvas/Google Classroom) Do NOT submit a level 2 audition if you are submitting a level 3 audition.

Students are welcomed to audition and be enrolled in multiple music classes.
If you are auditioning for a level 3 class, you do NOT need to audition for a level 2 class.

Below you will find information that pertains to your specific audition. If you have any questions, please email your section leader first before contacting Mr. Tran.
The expectation is that the students are able to be responsible and communicate if they have questions.

Marching Band Expectations (For band only.)

The Band 1 and Orchestra 1 courses are designed for 9th-10th graders at any playing level and does not require any audition.
These classes are designed to assist instrumental muisc students transition into high school or older students who don't wish to commit a lot of time to music.
Anyone at any level may join this class. No audition required, but you should email Mr. Tran.

Students in band 1 are encouraged to audition for marching band,
however, out of class rehearsals are not mandatory.

Students in band 1 who participate in marching band may be promoted to band 2 based on level.

The Band 2 and Orchestra 2 courses are designed for 10th-12 graders and requires an audition.
9th graders are still welcomed to audition, however, the expectations are moderately higher than a level 1 course.
These classes are designed for students who read ensemble literature at an intermediate level and can perform solo music at an ABRSM grade 2-4 level (or equivalent).

The audition consists of three excerpts and a set of scales that do not need to be memorized.
Auditions must be completed online via Canvas or Google Classroom. Each item must be a separate file and clearly labeled.

Students in band 2 are expected to audition for marching band.
10th/11th graders receive PE credit for marching band participation.

The Band 3 Honors Wind Ensemble and Orchestra 3 Honors Chamber Orchestra courses are designed for very advanced 11th-12 graders and requires an audition.
9th-10th graders are still welcomed to audition, however, the expectations are extremely higher.
These are honors level courses which means the work load is more demanding than a CP course.
These classes are designed for students who read ensemble literature at a very advanced level and can perform solo music at an ABRSM grade 5+ level (or equivalent).

The audition consists of three excerpts and a set of scales. Only the major scales are requried to be memorized. All other scales can be played with sheet music.
Auditions must be completed online via Canvas or Google Classroom. Each item must be a separate file and clearly labeled.

Students who are winds/battery players must pass a marching proficiency test.
Students in front ensemble do not need to pass a marching proficienct test.
Out of class rehearsals are required.
10th/11th graders receive PE credit for marching band participation.

The Band 3 Honors Jazz Ensemble course is designed for 11th-12 graders and requires an audition.
9th-10th graders are still welcomed to audition, however, the expectations are extremely higher.
This is an honors level class which means the work load is more demanding than a CP course.
This class is designed for students who read ensemble literature at a very advanced level and can perform solo music at an ABRSM grade 5+ level (or equivalent).

The audition consists of at least three excerpts and a set of scales. The major scales are requried to be memorized. The remaining scales could be played with sheet music.
All students must be able to identify and spell each chord on their piece.
Auditions must be completed online via Canvas or Google Classroom. Each item must be a separate file and clearly labeled.
The audition must also be completed in person and will include two components of sightreading. [1st is sightreading music alone and the 2nd is sightreading with a conductor.]
All Honors Jazz Ensemble musicians must ALSO complete the Band 3 Honors Wind Ensemble scales.
