Sudden BSOD after some time, usually happening about 5 minutes after restore from suspend.

Apple, replaced the mainboard once while the MBP was in warranty, reason it failed to start one morning, fully dead.

Later ~May 2013, I replaced the mainboard again, on my expense because the computer was resetting 1-2 times a day.
I have used the Apple MacBook Pro feedback form, I have visited a Genius BarYes, at a Genius BarGPU confirmed to be faulty, apple offered to replace the mainboard for 440£ !!!

Worse, even with the "new" mainboard (refurbished, all spares are!) I do see GPU related problems from time to time.
YesNoBased on last experience I would like to have my money back for the repair.

I am a software developer with good knowledge on how hardware works and that's clearly a design / production fault that is known by Apple. Too many identical reports are online, still it is quite a good business for Apple to service these computers....

Then the screen started to turn light grey and will not show any response to anything I clicked.
I had Apple look at it and they decided there were no hardware issues , but some kind of permissions incorrect and changed it for no charge.
It seemed to boot up nice, but then it crashed for real and now it only show a light grey screen at every start up.
When I spoke with a technician from a Authorized Service Provider they determent it was the Logic Card (Mother Board)
I have visited a Genius Bar, An Apple Authorized Repair shopYes, at a Genius BarThe Authorized Shop wanted $1199 for a new logic board or $499 for a refurbished board. Plus $207 for the repair.

The workaround to make it booting again was to disable the corresponding kext graphics drivers, which made the system bootable and usable. Depending of the amount of disabled kext, it could still crash or it is stable but still with with graphic distortions. If not all graphic related kext are disabled, the system may crash with a gray, black, red, blue, black with red stripe or just distorted/shifted screen.

Sometimes it worked properly for a few hours, but at the end the problem came back.
Graphic effects which can be observed are mainly in red, sometimes in blue. The patterns are sometimes dynamic, but the main red pattern consists of horizontal 1pixel lines over the whole screen, which somehow only affect the gray component of a pixel.
I have visited a Genius BarNo, I have not pursued a repaireurope, no warranty, custom RAM, high usage, no mechanical or liquid accidents.

Then it started to freeze the computer with a Blue lined screen.
After restart, it open the apple logo but never boot and the cooler goes Full-Throttle.
If i restart several times (8 or 10) sequentially it boots normally but if an app switches to Discrete GPU it gets the blue lined screen.
So i use gfxCardStatus v2.3 to lock in the Intel GPU.
And then i never shutdown the macbook, always use sleep mode.
But some times the machine halts suddenly.
I'm surviving but i'm living on the edge because i use it for work.
I have used the Apple MacBook Pro feedback formNo, I have not pursued a repairI live in Brazil and we don't have an Apple Store yet to call for help.

Plugging the external display in and out would fix the issue. Eventually the issue started freezing my macbook completely. After figuring out it was due to discrete graphics, I could switch to integrated via gfxcardstatus, but it would so often fail to wake up from sleep or just fail to boot (thin lines on the apple logo boot screen)I have used the Apple MacBook Pro feedback form, Wrote emails to tech supportYes, at an Apple Authorized Service ProviderA motherboard replacement was offered, but was too expensive. It was recommended to resolder the graphics chip onto the motherboard. I went ahead with it and my laptop was fine for a month, then started having the same issues. They did the procedure again, which again covered it for a month when the issues reappeared. The third time (and last time covered under my repair warranty), it appears, did the trick since I'm issue free for a while now.Unsure, but stable for 2 months nowUnsure, stable for 2 monthsI had no sort of falling/water damage, I put in custom RAM, a Samsung SSD 830, and a OWC data doubler (which replaced my optical disk with another slot for a hard drive- I used the stock one in that slot.)

Solid black screens that return after a minute or two, only to gray out and display the "black screen of death" message in the center.

Strobe/flashing effect, where the image appears to be flashing between the split-screen version and solid white. I couldn't capture the flashing with iPhone video, because it doesn't show up. Evidently it's flashing at the same rate video frames are being recorded.

YesYesMy August 1st post to the forum is pasted below, under the dashed line. I don't want the end result to be posted publicly yet, but when I did this, the Senior Advisor offered to cover parts ($210) if I covered labor ($100). Then they never charged me at all. I'm not sure why this is the case, but I'm not about to ask questions about it. Just counting it as a blessing.

If your machine is in need of repair, I very HIGHLY recommend reading this article, then calling Apple Care (even if you're out of warranty) and following the advice in Step 3.

Because there is only so much the first-level people can do, politely ask for a "Senior Advisor" when they won't agree to cover your out-of-warranty repair. Then, go through the Step 3 advice again with the Senior Advisor.

http://gigaom.com/2009/11/23/apple-tech-support-tips-4-steps-to-bend-apple-to-yo ur-will/

Have some talking points ready before you call, especially if you have a long history with Apple products. They will see your registration history in their system, which seems to help. Lastly, be polite at all times. The person you speak with had nothing to do with your machine's design or failure, but has everything to do with resolving it to your satisfaction.

No guarantees, but it certainly won't hurt you to give this a try.

At this point on any consecutive reboot the system would no longer properly load into Windows 8 or OSX, or to the point where the system would not boot into OSX\Windows 8 or even the OSX\Windows installer at all.

Machine finally died, took it into the Applestore whom then triaged and diagnosed a logic board replacement was necessary. 2 weeks later, and ~$350 lighter on the pocketbook received the unit back (flat rate depot repair). As of 8/3/13 no issues (but have only had the unit back for 3 days)/

I love the hardware's capabilities, and aesthetics but if at the end of the day it doesn't really do what it was originally intended for it's money down the drain. This has definitely impacted my opinion of Apple laptop hardware and any future purchasing decisions this will most likely have an impact.
