Hello, welcome to the BREWS EDI resources database!
2
BREWS stands for Broadening Representation and Equity With Science, and one of our core activities is data-driven seminars. To say that we love data and research is truly an understatement. We have been thinking of ways to share the love and further these discussions in the department, and have heard from quite a few people who share these visions. We are therefore excited to announce the BREWS EDI Resources Database, i.e., this thing!

"This thing"
5
We hope this thing will serve as a centralized repository of EDI resources for our department and beyond (eventually!). Feel free to peruse and do whatever you want with it! This thing is by no means comprehensive -- the goal is to grow this thing collectively (see Intake form below), and hope we can spark some conversations along the way 😊
6
We would like to note that we are not the only people who are doing this! For example, a similar resource list was also compiled by the Centre for Biodiversity and Conservation at the AMNH. See Web Resources for more.

Code of Conduct
9
Our purpose is to promote equity, diversity, and inclusion, and discourse surrounding these issues as a first step towards meaningful change. Our rules are to ensure all people can participate in the conversation freely and safely. We expect that everybody using this platform will respect each other, and demonstrate diligence in understanding how other people’s perspectives, behaviors, and worldviews may be different from their own. Racist, sexist, colonialist, homophobic, transphobic, and other abusive and discriminatory behavior and language will not be tolerated. You may not impersonate individuals, groups, or organizations in a manner that is intended to or does mislead, confuse, or deceive others, or post other people's private information (such as home phone number and address) without their express authorization and permission. You may not deceptively share synthetic or manipulated media that are likely to cause harm. Offenders will be blocked from our platform and we reserve the right to pursue further disciplinary actions.
10
Please consult the Uof T Code of Student Conduct for details on unacceptable conduct and possible sanctions.

How to use this thing
13
This database exists as both a Google Sheet and a Zotero group library. The two platforms contain the same entries, but Zotero provides the added functionality of commenting -- a great way to share your thoughts and start a conversation with fellow EEBers!
14
You may view the Zotero group library here.
15
To use the comment function, you will need to become a group member. Please email Ashley Reynolds (ashley.reynolds@mail.utoronto.ca) to request membership.
16
The database was created by Amber Gigi Hoi, Ariel Greiner, and Ashley Reynolds, and is currently moderated by Amber Gigi Hoi, Ariel Greiner, and Ashley Reynolds.

Keywords searching/sorting
30
Ideally, records in the google sheet and zotero public library will have the same tags. However, as it is very difficult to enter multiple tags in google sheet (and still have it be effective to search and sort), we therefore implement the following tag system here in the GSheet:
31
There will be three tag columns. Tag 1 codes "equity-seeking group", Tag 2 would be "action items", and Tag 3 would be miscellaneous. The moderator(s) will do their best to choose the most representative tag(s) for each resource. You’ll find the complete list of tags currently in use, by category, below. To explore the full suite of tags assigned to each resource, simply head over to our Zotero group library!
32
When suggesting/adding a tag, please choose existing ones from the list for the sake of consistency. We are open to suggestions regarding tag names and assignments, though, so please do get in touch if you have any feedback for us!
33
Equity-seeking group: Black in STEM, Culture, Disability, Ethnicity/race, First gen, Gender, Global South, Indigenous peoples, Intersectionality, LGBTQIA2S+, Neurodivergence, Non-native English speaker, Religion/spirituality, Socioeconomic background, Women in STEM
34
Action items: Accessibility, Authorship and publishing, Decolonization, Field experiences, Funding, Hiring, Implicit bias, Mentoring, Microaggressions and assault, Parenthood, Pedagogy, Politics/policy, Professional development, Retention, Social justice, Systemic bias.
35
Miscellaneous: Conferences/seminars, Health, Imposter phenomenon, Minority tax, Service dog, Teaching evaluations

The intake form
38
If you wish to make a contribution to the database, please fill in the intake form. Pending suggestions will appear in the very last sheet of the database, named Intake Form Responses. At the beginning of each month, moderators will go through the intake form and add all relevant submissions to both the google sheet and zotero public library.
