We do have a gang presence in the 46th ward/Sheridan Park that I think deserves special attention. Alderman Cappleman had a direct relationship with the leaders of rival gang factions and I hope the incoming alderwoman/police council members can maintain those relationships.

This may be outside of the scope of your position, but a huge driver of public safety issues is lack of affordable, appropriate housing. If we only build luxury studios and 1-bedrooms there will be fewer families that can live here long term, which provides community stability, and people with low to modest incomes will be forced to move or in the worst case onto the street.

Having a non-police mental health/public service first responder team that has been proposed in the Treatment Not Trauma ordinance is something I would love to see. In addition to being able to respond to immediate needs however, I think that these teams need to be supported by a better connected and resources network of care within the city, so that when they respond to a particular call they have the ability to connect people to the care most appropriate to their long term needs.

Roscoe Village has a very one track mind when it comes to public safety, folks tend to clutch their pearls when they hear of a crime in the neighborhood (and there aren't many!). Our residents need to be educated that more cops don't make crime go away. Our neighborhood is incredibly safe. I'm concerned with accountability of the wider police department as a whole and inefficiencies and inequities that exist. I can speak from experience when my house was robbed how inefficient the police department is.

Improving police/community relationshipsBike lane obstruction enforcement should be increased/improved.

It's particularly bad on Clark Street through Wrigleyville with many food delivery drivers and ride share cars double park in the bike lanes for long periods of time, sometimes pulling in and stopping abruptly

I watch as police vehicles roll by and do nothing about it. I don't necessarily think we need an armed patrol officer to address this but a faster response is needed and having the folks who ticket cars for meter and zone enfocement could help.

I'm quite concerned about the mayor-elect's response to the recent violence that took place downtown - there should not have been any "however" in his statement. I then saw him equivocating on TV about the matter. You will need to influence him to take a law and order approach which is sorely needed after four years of Lightfoot. There can be no allowance for unlawful behavior which I have seen and experienced right here in E Lakeview. I am very concerned about the outcome of the election at the city level as well as at my ward level. The candidates have a soft on crime/anti-police mentality.

Certain citizens have employed a private security force that patrols the neighborhood. This security car does not make me feel any safer; rather it feels like an invasion of privacy to be, for example, walking the dog when the flashing lights follow me down the alley. If this were CPD, I could work with community policing councils on surveillance, but this private security is only accountable to unnamed wealthy interests.

I sometimes get the impression, based on the East Lakeview Neighbors email list, that some people (I'm assuming the wealthier people) are a bit obsessed/paranoid about crime in the neighborhood. I personally think, and have experienced, safety. That's why I think it's important to seek out the marginalized communities here who don't join such email lists and may have a very different experience. I never even lock my door (in an apartment building) except to sleep and I've never had issues. I would like to see my neighborhood have more solidarity with other, more multi-racial and working class neighborhoods who have more serious problems with both crime and ineffective policing, and who (based on last mayoral election results) are ready for new approaches to both. I didn't choose "response to homelessness" as a problem because I don't know what you mean by that - I believe the homeless need to be treated humanely and problem-solving would include affordable housing and other measures, not kicking people off benches and streets.
I haven't had contact with police personally in the neighborhood so I can't speak to it.

Pedestrian safety is still an issue on all local streets whether residential or main thoroughfares. I know this is being addressed in some efforts coming later throughout this year but we must continue to evaluate to see if they reduce dangerous situations and harmful incidents to walkers and bikers—both adults and children.
We don’t have a formalized group but the 2400 block of west Cuyler has an email list where we can inform neighbors of incidents, check in one another, etc. Contact me to learn more if this sounds like a useful resource. Big trucks, delivery vans and construction equipt. vehicles are parked next to STOP signs in this area, thus Drivers cannot see STOP signs and pedestrians crossing. Which creates dangerous situations, More tickets need to be issued in this area. Since the city always needs more money, there should be more ticket issuers on a daily basis for illegal parking.

I think we are fortunate in this District to have a good relationship with our police and a relatively low crime rate. What I really think would be useful for everyone are investments in alternative public safety resources in addition to policing. Police are necessary, but they are stretched thin I believe on issues that don’t need an entire squadron to handle.

I'm a licensed psychologist and, in this capacity, would be interested in providing training to police on how people react under severe stress, especially when they have a trauma history or underlying mental illness, in order to help foster police awareness and sensitivity in such cases. I'm very busy (I am a clinician, supervisor, and clinical director) and have therefore been unable to research if anyone is interested in this sort of training and how I would go about doing so. I'd be interested in discussing this further if you believe this might be worthwhile and are able to put me in touch with folks at CPD who would be involved in organizing such training for officers.

I think it would be interesting to improve public safety by encouraging neighbors to have better relationships with each other. In the 44th ward, you have neighbors throw loud parties, litter, and cause disturbances which is does not improve the quality of the neighborhood but at the same time people will use racist dog whistles to talk about crime. Maybe we encourage folks to build community with each other which then will assist with having more challenging conversations about crime and safety.

In terms of substance use disorders, promote more investment in medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for opioid addiction. That means providing medication like suboxone rather than putting people in detox. (Btw, "substance abuse" is no longer the preferred term. Use "substance use disorder" or "addiction.")
