New England Native Plants List (version 1.0)

This native plant list was developed by Amherst Garden Club Environmental Sustainability Committee members as a resource for New England gardeners. It was developed using only resources from credible, research-based organizations such as the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, The Native Plant Trust, etc.

There are multiple tabbed sheets in this Excel file, which are accessed by selecting the desired tab at the top or bottom of the sheet (depending on what device and browser you are using). This tab is labeled “Directions”, for instance. Think of the tabs as being pages. This is the Directions page. You have to go to the Alpha by Latin Name page (by clicking on that tab) to see the list itself. On that tab/page, the left-hand column contains the Latin name.

The list contains multiple variables of interest including: plant type, native range, light needs, moisture, flower color, size, bloom timeframe, resistance to deer/rabbits, and other characteristics. These variables are shown at the top of the spreadsheet as column headers. The small orange triangle in some of the column lables contains a comment that can be viewed by hovering your mouse or cursor over it.

For convenience, versions of the list that have been presorted by common name, color, and type (instead of Latin name) are also provided. To see those versions, click on their tabs/pages. If you would like us to add a tab/page presorted by something else, email info@amherstgardenclub.org.

To find information about one plant:

 On a Mac: Click Edit>Click Find>Type in name of the plant>Click Find All

 On a PC: Click Find & Select from the Editing section under Home. Click Find>Type in the name of the plant>Click Find All

The plant will then be highlighted by a green square in both the name and companion plant sections.

This file is “view only”. You may save a copy for your own use if you like, which will allow you to sort and filter based on the plant characteristics of your choice.
