Charity Entrepreneurship is evaluating ideas related to health security in order to start charities that work in this space

By health security we mean:
anything that minimizes the danger of acute public health events

• This process was exploratory and rigorous, but not comprehensive. We did not research all ideas in depth. A decision not to take forward a charity idea to the point of writing a full report should not be seen as a view that the idea is not good.

• Scores contain artifacts so should be used with caution. For example, a good idea might have artificially low scores if we already know someone great is working on it.

• Some ideas on this list were contributed by people and organizations outside of Charity Entrepreneurship. We have not credited every idea, but are highly grateful to those who added ideas and supported our research at all stages.

We listed over 200 charity ideas. We reworked these into a list of 150, broken down into categories

A quick prioritization to choose 41 ideas for further research. This is based on the intuitive assessments of 2-3 staff each spending 5-15 min looking into each idea

A medium prioritization to choose 10-15 of those for further research. This is based on 0.5-1h evidence reviews, expert opinions, quick CEAs and a paths to failure WFM.

We listed about 40 tech ideas where a new charity could potentially play a role in promoting the technology or directly driving forward technological development

We prioritized the top 6-8 ideas for further research based on 5h evidence reviews, quick CEAs and a paths to failure WFM.

HOW WE PRIORITIZE

The primary metric held in mind for quick prioritization was: lives saved in expectation over the next 50 years

Given pandemic risks are likely heavy-tailed, we expect reasonable correlation between interventions that will save many lives and interventions that prevent existential risks

Will likely have some similar priorities (e.g., preventing lab accidents), and some differing priorities (e.g., keen on AMR work, not excited by refuges)
