1 | Fertility rates Dataset - v15 via Gapminder
2 | About this file | This file has multiple sheets with data for one or more indicators used by Gapminder. In this sheet below you'll first find an overview of the indicators (measures) and the list of underlying sources. The actual data we use, is found in the sheet(s) labeled "data-...". This file is also a documentation of the data process. To follow how the data was transformed from the original sources, start in the sheet to the far right, which holds the input data. You can then follow the process step by step, by looking at the formulas in the sheets from right to left, until you reach the output in the "data-..." sheets.

11 | 1 | Babies per woman | This is the number of children that would be born to a woman if she were to live to the end of her childbearing years and bear children in accordance with age-specific fertility rates of the specified year. It expresses the statisctical indicator total fertility rate. | Total fertility rate | number of babies per woman | tfr | measure | 2

14 | Dataset description: | This file contains data on total fertility rates compiled by Gapminder, based on multiple sources: — 1800 to 1950 (and in some cases also years after 1950): Gapminder v6 which were compiled and documented by Mattias Lindgren, based on multiple sources, (see documentation here https://www.gapminder.org/data/documentation/gd008/) — 1950 to 2023: In most cases we use the latest UN estimates from World Population Prospects 2024 published in the file with Annually interpolated demographic indicators — 2024 – 2100: We use the UN forecast of future fertility rate in all countries, called median fertility variant. We combine the series by linking our historic estimates with the UN data by smoothly transitioning the curves over a period of 40 years (i.e 1930-1970) from whatever our historic sources had to the levels that UN is publishing. The data is part of Gapminder effort to build a fact-based worldview by showing the big picture of global development. When we find multiple data sources that haven't been combined we combine them into one consistent timeseries. This often results in large data uncertainty, as the underlaying data-sources use different methodologies etc. But we still dare to combine data that hasn't been combined, as we find it extremely important to visualize the big picture, which people otherwise tend to get absolutely wrong. Before using our data for any other purpose though, please read the documentation to make sure you are aware of our levels of doubts in the data.
