Welcome!

This guide contains information on general basic genetics and genetics specific to Indian blue peafowl (Pavo cristatus). This guide does NOT currently contain information regarding green peafowl (Pavo muticus) or green/blue hybrid peafowl (Spaldings).

Because the peafowl genome has not been mapped in a way that identifies the actual genes and their mutations for color and pattern, the information presented in this document has collected what I have either found to be true or what I believe seems most likely to be true based on collected information from breeders that have done test breeding or worked with the mutations. The information is true to my understanding of peafowl genetics as of 3/2024, and the notations within are layman notations, not actual gene names (since, again, we don't have those... yet). If (and hopefully when) the peafowl genome is mapped, I will update this document with the proper scientific gene notations.

Information is always being gained and updated within our community as well, and there are sometimes exceptions or nuance, meaning that information here may be out of date or not quite true 100% of the time. I have tried to make note of these exceptions or nuances on the Basic Genetics page and in the sections to which they pertain. That being said, please check the purple box on this page for info I am still trying to find.

Missing info!
I am currently seeking info on the genetics included in ROSEWOOD.

If you notice a morph missing from the master list, AND you know the morph's genetic makeup (whether it is a single, novel mutation or a combination of previous mutations and what they are, etc), please leave a comment on this box (right click or tap hold and select add comment) or pop me an email at
LongfeatherLane@gmail.com. If you've only "heard" of the morph but have no other information, please wait until you know more.
