Women, Race & Class - Angela Davis. In my opinion, this is the ultimate book. Abolitionist, activist, race and gender hero, Angela Davis is all time and her books are fantastic. Read first. My ooooonly comment would be that this is US centric, but that's kinda consistent with the time of publishing etc
3
Bad Feminist - Roxanne Gay.Incredible author, great approach to feminism. Kinda against the left’s habit of eating our own if we’re not perfect, how all feminism still has some patriarchy in it and we’re not the worst for still worrying about that stuff.
4
Girl, Woman, Other - Bernadine Evaristo A non fic with a difference. Written like poetry. Incredible storyline weaving together different women's stories across race, generation, gender performance, class, segregation and so many social issues. Phwoah
5
We Should all be Feminist - Chimimanda Ngozi
This is a transcript of her seminal speech. Short. Amazing. Read it. Watch it. Live it. Breathe it.
6
The Second Sex - Simone De beauvoir.I haven’t actually finished this, not so good at pushing through books with writing that’s a bit ~stuffy~ but you can trace a lot of action in the feminist movement back to here. Worth a read for that fundamentalist viiibe
7
Men Explain Things To Me - Rebecca Solnit.
A bit upper echelon academic vibe, wealthy author gets mansplained, but it’s hella relatable and she writes well. Usually she’s a geologist I think (?) so nice to get a different background from most feminist authors.
8
Feminism is for Everybody - Bell HooksBell Hooks can be a bit uncomfortable to read bc her terminology and social views are often a bit dated, but she’s a force within the feminist movement. Her book on love is great too!
9
Women Who Run With Wolves - Clarissa Pinkola Estes
Halfway through this currently. It’s big. It’s mystic. It takes you through tales you know and breaks them apart. Very Jungian, I had to learn about Jungian psychology to properly take this in. So worth it. Pretty mind boggling stuff.
10
The Vagina Monologues - Eve Ensler.Been a while since I’ve opened this but from memory it was performed as a play. Very entertaining, short read.
11
The Beauty Myth - Naomi WolfI find Naomi Wolf pretty dry so like to split her with some fun reads, but she has some crystal clear views on the world it’s astounding.
12
Trick Mirror - Jia TolentinoVery current. A little bit elite white feminist vibes, but mostly crisp calls. Good for an audio book. Very similar to Pandora Sykes and Zadie Smith but I found both of them overrated compared.
13
The Bluest Eye - Toni MorrisonHonestly just a great read in every avenue. So worth it for fun, and for insight into so many elements of our cultures.
