3/25/2014 9:11:11reckless recordschicago, ilyou probably already know about reckless in chi, but of all the places i've lived, its one of my favorites and i return there with every visit, specifically the location on n. milwaukee ave. the other locations leave something to be desired, imo. so many of the black metal/death metal/experimental rabbit holes i ventured down began in this store. haven't been there in a while, but they used to have great used sections with current stuff (not just stack after stack of herb albert) and its the only place where they were playing something on the stereo and i asked 'what is this?' and promptly bought whatever it was.

AND its right next to myopic books! which is a rabbit hole of a different order.

3/25/2014 9:20:37Princeton Record ExchangePrinceton, NJHuge new selection, even huger used section. Usually carry some hard to find weird stuff (ie Root Strata, Digitalis, Students of Decay). Not afraid to put new stuff on sale.
Also, Princeton is a pretty cool little town.
5
3/25/2014 9:26:24Record GrouchBrooklyn, NYTiny, but killer selection. Geared towards your average Wire reader, but also some outer limits stuff too.
6
3/25/2014 9:34:26Bent CrayonCleveland, OHB.C.'s dedication to underground and out sound is mind blowing. Just about every damn bin is stuffed with obscuro awesomeness. Plus, they are the go-to store in America for cutting-edge techno and electronic music.
7
3/25/2014 9:39:03Bull City RecordsDurham, NCChaz and his employees have their shit down pat and provide excellent recommendations. Usually a good cross selection of genres, new/used, etc. etc. Definitely the best shop in Durham, one of the best in the Triangle for the last 6 years or so.

3/25/2014 9:42:04Sorry StateRaleigh, NCAside from being a 15 minute walk from my apartment, Sorry State is the newest record shop in town with an amazing selection mainly focused on punk/hardcore/garage rock but one can often find excellent oddities such as Stockhausen, Blue Humans, Eugene Chadbourne, Loren Connors, etc. etc. etc. Also an excellent punk label and distributor putting out bands like Whatever Brains and Brain Flannel. Of course you can always visit Sorry State if you're coming down for Hopscotch this year, it's three blocks from Fayetteville St., maybe five from Kings.

3/25/2014 9:45:52Boo Boo RecordsSan Luis Obispo, CAI don't know many/any record stores in the States, I'm actually from Australia, but I passed through this place with a friend recently and was really impressed with some of the shit they had. A lot of their stuff was pretty run-of-the-mill, there wasn't much in the way of experimental metal (etc.) on vinyl, their CD stock was pretty OK (they did have an oddly large classical CDs section, which I thought was cool). I was particularly stoked on their cassettes, though, I was able to pick up a few neat demos from bands like Bell Witch and they even had a copy of Stephen O'Malley's recent tape on Editions Mego. Plus, San Luis Obispo is a really beautiful town, and there are a shitload of great sandwich places and coffee shops around, so its a REALLY great place to stop for a quick visit over lunch if you get the chance (thats what I did).

3/25/2014 9:50:41JL RecordsWest Lafayette, INSuper fucking cool inventory. Owner is close friends with Jeff Isbell (aka Izzy Stradlin for GnR) so the stories are amazing. If there is something you don't see, he can and will get it for you. Also does buybacks at a fair price. Definitely worth the stop if you find yourself in Indiana, in Purdue country.

3/25/2014 9:55:17Cabin Floor RecordsGreenville, SCIt's a hidden gem of the Southeast that should be famous, my go-to local record store, just 10-15 minutes from my house. Joe, the owner, knows his shit. He specializes in the weird, the obscure, tons of vintage, tons of experimental, tons of old-timey folk / rock / gospel / jazz, tons of everything awesome, you name it, including all kinds of cassette tapes, new and old, mostly experimental / small labels / self-released stuff. He also hosts shows. FB page here: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Cabin-Floor-Records/126363234062075

3/25/2014 9:56:47Amoeba MusicLos Angeles, CAAgain, I only went here on a holiday (I'm not from the States) and I know everyone knows about Amoeba already. All I really want to say is that if you're into weird drone/noise and experimental music (which is probably a safe bet if you're reading AGB, right?) DON'T FORGET TO GO OUT TO THE BACK ROOM AND CHECK OUT THEIR "Unusually Experimental" SECTION. Its really easy to miss if you're in a hurry but I found so much awesome stuff there, it straight up blew my mind.

3/25/2014 9:57:02Jerry's RecordsPittsburgh, PAJerry's in the PGH neighborhood of Squirrel Hill is a digger's paradise. DO NOT go if you've less than 2 hours to spend wandering the (often narrow) aisles. Most everything is modestly priced and in useable condition. Jerry and his staff have DEEP knowledge about what's on-hand and have been known to bury some gems in the stacks from time to time. Jerry's is a must-visit if you're in the Steel City.
14
3/25/2014 10:20:59ApopSt. Louislots of black metal and underground shit and lots of art and sex books too

3/25/2014 10:50:03Long in the ToothPhiladelphia, PAI've only been visiting this store for the past 6 months, but have found myself there at least once a week since the start of the new year.

Nick, the owner, is incredibly knowledgeable and always willing to talk about a particular genre, subgenre, or artist.

The store's split between a solid selection of new titles of all types and an ever-growing section of used. The used section is genre-divided as you'd expect. The new stuff is thrown together to enhance the spirit of the hunt.

Used prices are fair for a shop in a major city. New prices are roughly $1 or $2 more than what you'd pay online, which is great.

3/25/2014 10:55:34Toss up!VariousHow can you pick one???

Ok there are a handful of record stores I adore.

When I am going straight up classic rock, Weirdly enough, RRR in Lowell. I know Ron's more well known for his noise, and I have found a lot of great post-punk there, but I love his classic rock selection. Plus Rob is awesome.

Record exchange in Salem for quick fixes. Dudes there are auper nice!

Armageddon in Harvard Square for proto and post punk (if twisted village was still there, THAT was my all around favorite). Clerks are OK but generally i go here for selection not experience.

In your Ear Cambridge for Psych.
The least pretentious of the Cambridge stores.

Mystery train in Gloucester is a good one for bringing lots of people with different tastes. Something for everyone and super nice employees.

The Record Store (which is weirdly enough a comic book store) on route 9 in Howell, NJ . They only have a few rows of records, but what they get when they get it, holy shit. I always pop in there the day after Christmas. One year found the entire early discography of Wreckless Eric, original pressings. Another half the Fugs albums. Yet another brought tons of Suicide. Pricey but pristine as WORTH IT.

And finally, the largest record store on my list, Jerry's in Pittsburgh has been a long time favorite and I will be glad to go on a regular basis again! Dudes who work there rule. All around good, and often surprising, selection.
17
3/25/2014 11:17:53Other MusicNew York, NYThey most often have both things I'm looking for and things I didn't know that I would want. I buy all of my obscure vinyl presents for others here because they'll always have something to discover that's cooler than what I could imagine.

3/25/2014 11:38:30HardwaxBerlin, GermanyWalking down a dark alleyway to find the doorway to this shop was an adventure. This is an unbelievable place and a landmark / ground zero for dub techno and similar genres. I could've easily spent all my money there. Still, I had to lug home a huge box of 12" basic channel stuff.

3/25/2014 11:52:34the ghost of eastsides
45 W Southern Ave Tempe, AZ 85282
reincarnation of eastside records (also in tempe, the original shop was open for decades). at this point it's the only weirdo record store in the phoenix area. mike, the owner, knows his stuff and is always telling hilarious anecdotes about seeing/meeting underground shows and bands (sun ra, the sun city girls, etc). lots of rare jazz, psych, noise, weird stuff, etc...
he also rents out space to several other record vendors including stinkweeds (the phoenix areas most popular indie record store) so there's lots of different kinds of records to dig through. the whole store including all the separate vendors is actually called the double nickels record collective.

Right in the middle of one of the best areas in town, lots of great food and bars within walking distance. They also host an amazing record fair twice a year!

3/26/2014 8:46:05Other MusicNY, NYI don't think Other Music really needs an intro, does it? I mean, their used section is better than most shops' new section. Killer electronic and out-there sections.
41
3/26/2014 10:02:08White NoiseHong KongThis is a great shop. For sentimental reasons, it's a favorite. I walked in after looking around on the internet for record shops in Hong Kong. I don't think I recognized even one album in their relatively small stock. I picked something random based on the cover design and asked the clerk if it's any good. His eyes got really big - yeah, this is incredible. It was Can's Tago Mago.

3/26/2014 13:58:50Anthem RecordsPortland, OR, USWeird records, tons of electronic/drone/metal/noise. Clerk is very knowledgeable and has local scene connections and knows about great shows. It's right down the street.

3/26/2014 23:36:21Weirdo RecordsCambridge, MATiny store on Mass Ave with tons of weird records (obviously), in fact almost EXCLUSIVELY weird records...also cool tapes, some books, weird art editions, and lots of crazy import CDs and LPs. They have local bands' stuff too. I've seen basically every weird music thing you can think of there (minidiscs?) and almost always get something (a weird old 45 for $1, or a $3 cassette...who can argue with that). And the owner is super cool and knowledgeable...she makes music (you can buy her cassettes and stuff there, though she doesn't advertise that it's hers so you have to either already know or ask), plays insane stuff in the store, and sometimes the store is closed early because she's at a show. Simply the best. (she has a great website too: http://www.weirdorecords.com )
51
3/27/2014 10:02:40Waterloo RecordsAustin, TXtons of great shit-- from the weird to the more mainstream. in-store shows with free beer. lots of musicians as clerks who know what they're talking about.
52
3/27/2014 10:51:24CD AlleyChapel Hill, NC, USABeen going there forever, and I'm still stuck in the CD format for some reason--since I have about 8 million of them. They also carry vinyl and cassettes. The owner and employees are classy folks all around. Also of note in the Raleigh-Durham-CH area: All Day Records in Chapel HIll, Bull City Records in Durham, and Schoolkids in Raleigh (the last remaining of the VERY old school records stores round here). I'm really lucky to live in a place that supports this many brick-and-mortar shops. I'd be lost without 'em.
53
3/27/2014 11:15:05Bath House RecordsWarsaw, INLocated in the basement of a downtown antique store, exclusively used stuff in a town where no one cares about records (meaning, they're rarely picked-over). I've found some real gems in there for reasonable - inexplicably cheap prices.
54

3/31/2014 17:49:25Acme RecordsMilwaukee, WIProbably somewhere around 2/3rd used 1/3 new. Almost entirely vinyl with a very small selection of CDs. Some 78s. The great thing about this store is how heavily curated by the owner it is (and he has excellent taste). There is a LOT less of the same old crap you see at EVERY used store in America and a whole lot you'll want to pick up. From rock to jazz to experimental/drone to country to folk. Did Milwaukee a great service by opening a few years ago.

4/7/2014 10:29:23CD AlleyChapel Hill, NCHas the best selection of experimental music in my area. Jenks Miller (Horseback) works/worked there.

Once I was in a coffee shop called Drip in Columbia, SC and struck a conversation up with the owner. Turns out he was the original owner of CD Alley and a super nice dude.

4/18/2014 16:13:00Acme RecordsMilwaukee, WISmaller selection than say, Reckless, but so many weird folk records, which is what I like the most! A great selection in general though. Really nice, cool guy owns and runs it. Old dog lying around. Good vibes, feels and looks nice... it's a low-slung mid-century shop redone in an urban way... cool record bins designed with MDF, bare concrete floor, and cool repurposed materials like old yardsticks and other wood are used in the interior. I love Acme Records. There are some other Acme Records so here is the URL of this particular Acme: http://www.acmerecordsmke.com/
76
4/24/2014 8:00:52Neptune MusicSeattle, WAWhen I lived in Seattle and started collecting records I'd come here at least weekly and find something great. Back then the metal was reasonably priced, too! The Yelp reviews complain about the guy who runs it being standoffish but I never had anything other than lovely interactions with him -- he was always interested in what we were buying and would let us know if new stuff was in that we might like. Most of the stuff had meticulous description & grading on a sticker on the sleeve. I love Neptune.
77
4/24/2014 8:04:13Redscroll RecordsWallingford, CTIt's Redscroll! I'm just throwing it up here to avoid the bystander effect of thinking that everyone will list Redscroll and then it winds up that no one listed Redscroll when I could have done something about it! Not on my watch! I don't know where Redscroll gets all their stuff, but boy do they have great collections that come in. They're also excellent with regard to keeping their store stuff and Discogs stuff straight so there aren't any mix-ups where I try to buy something from them on Discogs and someone has taken it already. Plus I think it's super convenient that they sell their stock online at all -- I can't always get there to browse.
