Gary2.xp2stevenknightAgree w/ Steven's analysis; I think per-Env is even better than per-IAPAT.
22
Gregsee noteWould it be better to make this a per-IAPAT object and fix the issue as a part of toolchain? If not, I agree with Steven's analysis and 2.x p2 is reasonable.
23
JasonI think scanner are part of the Configuration of Scons, not toolchains. I think Steven is correct, however it would be nice to have a iapat like object have an api to modify scanners

GaryI'm not sure here, don't know much about the help system.
35
GregUntangling Help() is a bigger problem than just this issue. I'd rather deal with it as a part of the IAPAT framework, where we are free to make fairly drastic changes.
36
JasonI think the help api need help in the current form as there is no way to group different options, making handling large sets with the help api ugly from the user point of view. then add some of these odd behaviors and it get to become easier to just add your own print statements and look for -h in argv

Steven2.xp3Agree that untangling all of Help() is a bigger problem, but I think we can make this workable by having "scons -h" print the local options by default, even when the Help() function is used, and then adding a keyword argument to Help() that can be set if there are people who really truly don't want the local options displayed. Note that we *can't* print the local options when -H is used, because -H is specifically intended to display SCons options *without* reading the SConscript files. I went ahead and updated the issue with a description, we should discuss whether 2.x p3 is the right priority.

Greg2.1 / 2.0p3Rob / me?Really two issues. Fixing the Tex/LaTeX tools should be done by Rob 2.1 (or 2.2?) p3. Fixing the README should be done by someone preparing the 2.0 release (I can put it in the trunk, but I don't know where it should go from there).

GaryGreg: why won't the patch work? Because the bat script won't run with an empty os.environ? I've seen this issue too actually, and would like to see it fixed. @Greg: even an empty string would work there; anything but None. None makes it use os.env internally. It doesn't have to be a new object each time.
74
GregThe patch won't work for the obvious reason, but maybe the code should be using Action._subproc() instead? @Gary&Steven: 'env=dict()' doesn't create a new object every time, which is probably the intent of the change. The point remains that Action._subproc() should be used to create the default shell environment.
