I usually look at a LinkedIn profile and/or resume BEFORE looking at a design portfolio, so once I've done both and thing it's a strong design candidate I immediately reach out via email if I have access to it (LOVE when designers include contact information in their portfolio, makes my life easier) or through LinkedIn mail if I don't have an email address

2 minutesInteraction Design CraftIntentionality / RationaleIt depends on which skillset I'm looking for - start with the needs of the role then look for those competencies in a portfolio.50Portfolios that have a unique aesthetic or point of view. So many portfolios look alike...it's refreshing to see a portfolio that represents the designer in a more personalized way. The other key things are a portfolio that's easy to navigate so that you can get to the meat of the work quickly. People are scanning, so don't bury the good stuff. It should be beautiful, easy to navigate, and informative.Reach out to the designer to chat or save them in an ATS to keep tabs on them.

5 - 10 minutesVisual Design CraftProcessCommunication / StorytellingLooks great visually, shows skillsets without getting too granular, can see the thought process and how they identified and addressed needs of the project. Also is clear about what part is their work vs incorporating someone else's (ie: if handed off visual design to someone else)I reach out to the person, talk about why I think their work is a fit for our work, and ask if they want to connect.
