in a slow chat, we spread questions out over a week; please feel free to chime in about any September question:
https://t.co/P4ZGNtard1

Q1 In what discipline(s) do you teach? What is ONE distinctive feature of your discipline(s) that affects your #ungrading?

A1: I teach writing, and a crucial feature for me is the inherent SUBJECTIVITY of writing assessment. students are more attuned to the arbitrariness of grading when it comes to writing than in other subjects I think... hence glad for all-feedback-no-grades :-)

A1: I primarily teach English, so most of the labor that my students perform is writing. #ungrading is almost a necessity here because grading students based on a single, usually problematic, standard of communicating is harmful #UngradingSlowChat https://t.co/PmmfufSsi7

A1: re: writing, all of us in academia are writers, and many (most? all?) of us appreciate how difficult writing is, expressing your thoughts to present & future audiences in all their diversity.
writing is HARD, & we know it.
writers need feedback, not grades #UngradingSlowChat https://t.co/jXb1neofib https://t.co/cQVR5fDzam

A1: Like @OnlineCrsLady, I teach writing (college comp. at a community college). For me, the idea of feedback's transformative power is what makes #ungrading work for my students. Before, I was using feedback simply to rationalize the grades I awarded! ☹️ #UngradingSlowChat https://t.co/w8kZCiUk2A

01/09/2020 15:49:30OnlineCrsLady
@dbuckedu SO TRUE for me too!
and students also lose out on the value of feedback, looking to the feedback simply as a gloss on the grade, rather than seeing feedback as an essential part of a writing process where the goal is meaningful GROWTH, not just a grade.

@OnlineCrsLady Yeah, when students see themselves in their writing, all a grade does is judge their self-worth according to an arbitrary standard. When we provide feedback, we recognize Ss personal excellence, honoring the "flow" involved in their mastery! #UngradingSlowChat

I teach English Comp at a community college. Been reading about ungrading for a while. I even graduated from college using written evals. Finally starting to do it!

@dbuckedu And while we as instructors know that writing is something that exists outside of ourselves and can be criticized, many/most of our students don't see it that way. They see themselves being graded, not their writing. Better to leave that evaluative aspect out. #UngradingSlowChat

23
01/09/2020 16:24:05dbuckedu
@KWMathias Agreed! Perhaps the fact that students perceive the grade as a judgment of themselves (and their self-worth) is THE best argument for #Ungrading in writing courses. Thanks for this point, Keith! #UngradingSlowChat

01/09/2020 16:48:44dbuckedu
The positive effects of #ungrading remain true, no matter the discipline. Sure, it may look different in a writing course compared to a math course, but the student remains the constant, as well as the damaging impact grades have on learning. #UngradingSlowChat https://t.co/MpNb7sldKe

A1: I teach SCIENCE! A lot of people think you can't ungrade in a science course, but of course you can. It does require some thinking about what the goals are for your course. Science if full of facts that are usually memorized - I don't buy into that. #UngradingSlowChat https://t.co/su95bevggZ

01/09/2020 17:15:50dbuckedu
@hsmiceli Interesting! So what are some alternatives for Ts who believe they must test for content knowledge? The attractiveness of simply assigning a multiple-choice exam worth 100 points is perhaps too great for some teachers. How do you use #ungrading with assessment? #UngradingSlowChat

27
01/09/2020 17:22:54dbuckedu
@hsmiceli Love this idea for metacognitive practice! Perhaps #ungrading in this way provides your students with more opportunities to share their mastery than simply making correct exam choices, and you can learn more about them than just by a grade on an exam! #UngradingSlowChat

01/09/2020 17:34:46OnlineCrsLady
@scottgr60613 that's why I'd like to see P/NP for Gen. Ed. in particular; if depts want to rate & rank students as they complete the major curriculum, okay, maybe that serves their bureaucratic (not educational) needs.
but using Gen Ed for a GPA boost serves no purpose IMO.

01/09/2020 17:37:14OnlineCrsLady
@mcjsa @scottgr60613 exactly. the way I motivate students to work hard in my classes (and they do! writing is HARD...) is by taking grade crapola off the table.
after that, then we can actually get to work.
chasing the easy A wastes everybody's time... esp. when we have work to do!

@OnlineCrsLady @SusanDebraBlum Maybe off-topic, but it just occurred to me that the un- prefix is used repeatedly to "fix" what's wrong in traditional educational practices. #unessays, #ungrading, and maybe others? It's like the fight to "undo" these harmful practices is a full-time thing! #UngradingSlowChat

Yes, the #untextbook--add another one to the un- list.

"upgrade" and "feedforward"--add these to the #UngradingSlowChat lexicon! 😄

@SaritaYShukla and I think motivation is big pitfall people fear: if they see grades as motivating (and so many college faculty do, and probably K-12 also?), then when there are no more grades, they have to think about motivation in new ways.
and that can be hard, even scary.

I also want to be super clear here: ungrading takes TIME. I can absolutely see why my fellow adjuncts shy away from it. I give so much feedback - written and verbal. It is not for those looking to ease their grading work. #UngradingSlowChat https://t.co/wRHsd0ugMH

A5. I'll just share a grad school observation: being told that in grad school a B is "really" a C, and a C is "really" an F.
at least that was the talk in my grad school.
I always thought grades were bonkers, but grad school made that even more clear to me :-)
