3	description	For the period 1790-1890, France was one of the few countries which sought to keep systematic (tabular) track of its expatriate citizens, making it possible to study international mobility at scale and in novel ways. The Archives of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs hold 120,000 digitised microfilm images of the records from 215 consulates around the world. The “État Civil” -- civil registration of births, deaths and marriages -- is an exploratory project led by Dr David Todd in collaboration with King’s Digital Lab, and supported by King's Faculty of Arts & Humanities, King's Department of History and the Harvard and Cambridge Centre for History and Economics. The project processes data from the registers of French consulates in Egypt to visualise how individuals temporarily or permanently resettled across borders, and help identify patterns of international mobility in the nineteenth century.

Data used to produce this map are collected from 'État Civil' (records of births, marriages and deaths) of the French consulates in Egypt (register offices of Alexandria, Cairo, Ismaïla, Port-Saïd and Suez) between 1792 and 1882. Identifiers for origin and destinations points correspond to Geonames identifiers. Coordinates are associated to Geonames and plotted into the georeferenced map. 3. With the exception of places of births for spouses and deceased which are always locations of origin, all locations recorded in the État Civil (places of birth, domiciles, previous domicile, and location of deed) are points of origins and destination in the flowmap spreadsheet. Previous domiciles are destinations for birth locations and origin of domicile locations. Locations of deeds correspond to the registry where the deeds were compiled (respectively Alexandria, Cairo, Ismaïla, Port-Saïd or Suez). 4. The count parameter calculates how many occurrences of connection between one location and another are recorded in the documents. There are therefore multiple types of trajectories and they often include intermediary locations (e.g. birth place --> previous domicile --> domicile --> place of registry of marriage; birth place --> place of registry of death; domicile place --> place of registry of child birth etc.).
