The volume contains the first and only critical edition of the text, which is preserved in a single medieval manuscript. It is accompanied by a modern English translation and by extensive textual and historical notes. The text is a major source for the history of the first Norman abbey in northern England, and thus for the reintroduction of monasticism to the North in the late eleventh century. It is therefore of considerable importance and deserves to be made available both to scholars and, through the translation, to a wider audience.

Philippe Henriot, The Last Act of Vichy: Radio Broadcasts, January – June 1944, Liverpool Online Series, 17 (Liverpool, 2011)

This edition is available (free of charge to users) at the following URL:
http://www.liv.ac.uk/cultures-languages-and-area-studies/research/liverpool-online-series/

The edition was published in PDF on 25 November 2011. For technical reasons, the original Word document was re-saved in PDF on 26 March 2013, and the new PDF uploaded on that date (hence this is the date showing in the document properties). Minor formatting modifications were made prior to the new upload, but no changes were made to the actual content of the document. The PDF dated 25 November 2011 is available for audit upon request.

The output is the first-ever scholarly edition of the texts of all 273 surviving radio broadcasts made in 1944 by Philippe Henriot, Vichy’s Secretary of Information and Propaganda from January to June 1944. The sources include both original textual and audio sources, many of which had previously been neither published (in the case of the textual sources) nor transcribed (in the case of the audio sources). The text of the broadcasts is accompanied by a 45,000-word introduction, which (a) provides appropriate textual information on the sources; (b) examines the creation, scheduling, transmission, publication and dissemination of the broadcasts; (c) sets the broadcasts in their detailed historical context; and (d) offers pathways for an analysis of their content. The edition is further supported by an extensive yet easy-to-use critical apparatus. This includes a chronological list of the broadcasts, giving the source(s) for each. There are also four hyperlinked glossaries and a hyperlinked list of abbreviations. The glossaries offer explanations of key terms in the introduction and broadcasts: (a) names; (b) publications; (c) groups, bodies and associations; and (d) historical and wartime references. Users simply click on a term in a broadcast or in the introduction to be taken to the appropriate explanation in the relevant glossary, from where, using Alt ←, they can return to the relevant broadcast. The glossaries contribute substantially to the provision of a simple and accessible reading experience for users, since they eliminate the use of extensive notes which would have significantly disrupted the appearance and flow of the text for users. The edition is completed by an extensive bibliography.

The Online Froissart: A Digital Edition of the Chronicles of Jean Froissart

This edition is available (free of charge to users) at the following URL: http://www.hrionline.ac.uk/onlinefroissart/

The Online Froissart brings a holistic, dynamic approach to the study of the manuscripts of Jean Froissart’s Chroniques. It establishes a robust and sustainable platform for the delivery of edited electronic transcriptions of the Chroniques, of annotation and other secondary materials pertaining to those transcriptions, and of digital reproductions of several of the original manuscripts in high-resolution format. Users of the Online Froissart can read the edited transcriptions, query textual data interactively, collate text across several witnesses, or use a special viewing mode allowing them to look up the definition of a word used by the chronicler in the online Dictionnaire du Moyen Français. These and other features offer users of the Online Froissart access to a range of both textual and non-textual information present on the manuscript page but normally not immediately accessible or even present in more traditional print editions.

C.E. Boniface, Narrative of the Shipwreck of the French vessel The Eole, on the coast of Kaffraria in April 1829 : This item is a critical edition, in English translation with an introduction and notes, of an important but forgotten French text, the Narrative of the Shipwreck of the Eole by C.E. Boniface, originally published in Cape Town in 1829. The narrative is concerned with the equally forgotten shipwreck of a French vessel in the Eastern Cape earlier that year, and tells the story of the survivors’ walk, barefoot and without food, through 200 miles of unknown territory until they reached Cape Colony, and it is completed by a description of their reactions to life in Cape Town.

An edition, translation and study of the remaining unedited poems in the Book of Taliesin (National Library of Wales MS Peniarth 2). The ten poems survey the past successes and failures of the Welsh people and foretell their final victory. The commentaries discuss the textual difficulties and compare the poems’ language and diction with those of other poetry up to c. 1350. The General Introduction and the introductions to the individual poems investigate allusions and possible contexts between the tenth and the thirteenth centuries.

The volume represents original archival research both in the textual edition of previously unpublished poetry and in the substantial critical introduction and notes to the texts. The critical introduction provides a new narrative of the distinctive shape that Crown loyalism took in Wales, and the specifically bardic frame that Welsh poets chose for their responses (whether politically radical or reactionary; whether for popular or elite consumption) to the French Revolution and the revolutionary controversy in Wales.

This volume is the only published material featuring the complete ymryson or bardic contest poetry of the cleric-poet ‘Sir’ Dafydd Trefor who was born c. 1460 and who died of the Black Death c. 1528. The volume studies the themes on which he and his bardic opponents debated, subjects ranging from a light-hearted request for a gift of four goats, to a defense of the native bardic tradition and the origin and purpose of Welsh poetry. The volume closes with Ieuan ap Madog ap Dafydd’s elegy to Dafydd Trefor.

This volume provides the first scholarly editions and English translations of the medieval Welsh versions of the legends of Mary Magdalene and Martha. Cartwright provides a detailed study of the Welsh manuscripts that contain the texts, a comparison between the different manuscript versions, and a discussion of the wider hagiographical context of the texts in Wales, showing Wales to have participated fully in European hagiographic traditions. The editions are accompanied by transcriptions, as well as translations, a clear description of the editorial methodology employed, and a comprehensive glossary that provides translations of all medieval words that occur in the texts.
