Overview:
17
Strengths:Notes:
18
LengthPaul has ridiculously long arms.
19
Pass Blocking Edge RushersHe handles speed rushers very well due to the sheer width he covers with his wingspan. It is very difficult to go around him.
20
Pass Blocking AnglesHis contact angles are impressive. He can generate lean to withstand initial speed to power and not risk losing balance.
21
22
Weaknesses:Notes:
23
Play StrengthHis arms are displaced too easily by chops, and powerful bull rushers sometimes get the best of him.
24
Getting Inside LeverageDefensive linemen often get the inside track to his chest. His arms are so long that his shoulder mobility may inhibit him from easily getting his arms inside.
25
Run BlockingHe is just not a run blocker. He can manage some inside zone, but does not create gaps. Paul should never be asked to block on the move.

Game:Takeaways:
29
Texas Tech (09/30/2023)Wide arms effective for locking rushers. Finishing plays in the run game. Insanely long arms. Maintained great balance and anchor through bull rush. Great hooks. Decent kickstep, but mostly used length to mitigate outside rusher. Not the most fluid lateral mover, but displaces enough ground with good balance and mirroring for it to not be a concern. Adequate downfield quickness. Uses his 36.25" arms very well. Can make some blocks that guys with 33" arms simply could not physically. Excellent adjustments to counter moves. Sustaining run blocks. Has not been tested by true power rusher, but appears that he could still gain some mass on his frame. Extension provides ridiculous reach. Throw back by bull rush from defensive tackle on stunt. Did not get hands inside, and was tossed backwards rather easily. Significantly better against speed and finesse than power. Tentative second level blocking. Needs more strength and aggression in the run game as well. Occasionally plays like he is a really nice guy who doesn't want to hurt people. Pops up a bit early at times, but is not much of an issue. Long enough to extend even when defender get into his chest. A bit of a clunky mover, but it works for him. High ceiling low floor player based on whether or not he can gain strength. Will currently get bull rushed into oblivion at the NFL level, but has the traits and pass blocking technique to become an excellent NFL left tackle.2nd Round Developmental Left Tackle. Most developmental tackles are day three, but his technique, traits, and upside warrant an early day two pick. Some upper body strength and 10lbs more or so could turn him into a great starting left tackle (currently listed at 315lbs).
30
Texas (10/31/2023)Slightly late off the line. Arms are ridiculously long. Ends often get inside leverage. Slower feet. Moderate flexibility. Speed rushers are stopped by his length. Good angle to handle strength. Arms are knocked down too easily by powerful chops. Does not get push up front. High-end pass blocker. Could develop into an elite pass blocking NFL left tackle, but not there just yet physically. Great contact angles. Does not do much on the move. Better at sustaining blocks than earlier in the season. Playing just a bit meaner as well. Great progress so far this season.Boosting grade from mid-2nd to early-2nd with clear improvements.

Final Scouting Report:
33
Patrick Paul is an elite pass blocker with ridiculous length. His wingspan inhibits edge rushers from cleanly getting around him, and he can still control his opponents' pads when they attain initial inside leverage. Against power rushers, he anchors well with great hip hinge and balance to prevent the rusher from being able to get by him with rips or push-pulls. Strength may be a limitation that allows strong clubs and chops to knock away his hands, but Paul will undoubtedly get stronger over the next couple of years. If a tackle's only objective was to keep a clean pocket, then Paul may be selected early in the first round.

Despite his pass blocking prowess, Paul is not much of a run blocker. He is very uncomfortable out in space and will likely be most serviceable on inside zone. Teams that are more run-dominant may have Paul off of their boards entirely, while more pass-heavy teams may consider Paul a first round talent. He may not be the most well-rounded prospect, but his absolute dominance when pass blocking this last season bodes well for his outlook as a pass-blocking NFL tackle.
