42024 Parade Marshal Jim Peterman We are happy to announce the 2024 Grand Parade Marshal for our annual celebration is Jim Peterman. Citizens will remember Jim as the local appliance provider in town - a business that was in operation for nearly 60 years.

Now 92-years-old, Jim served in the U.S.Air Force for two years, beginning in 1950, then later serving in the Reserves for an additional six years. He came home from the military to help his father, who had heart complications.

He met his late wife, Helen, in Rushville at a dance on the square when he came back from military leave. Though their stories vary, he said she approached him during a “ladies’ choice” dance and they were inseparable from this moment on. They married in July 1955, the same year as Peterman Appliance was established.

Peterman said he thinks he’s attended roughly 80 Smiles Days, mostly riding his 1929 Model A Ford in the parade with the classic cars. He said that car stays in his garage, coming out for Smiles Day.

Peterman has also provided services to Rushville in terms of the “civil defense” corps, which was a volunteer police force in the 1960’s, and more recently as the church projectionist at the First United Methodist Church in Rushville.

Currently, Peterman lives in Rushville with his two cats, Tom Pickles and Boots, weighing 15.1 and 22 pounds respectively. They can be seen swinging on a swing set in good weather.

We are thrilled to be able to bestow the Grand Marshal recognition to Jim for our annual celebration.
