4 | VTEEA’s Teacher of the Year Award is one of the highest honors given to Technology and Engineering Education classroom teachers and is presented in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the profession and their students. The Teacher of the Year Award provides public recognition at the local, regional and state levels. During VTEEA’s annual conference, honorees are formally introduced to the Awards Ceremony audience and presented an engraved plaque during the VTEEA Summer Conference. | ||||||

6 | The Teacher of the Year award program was established to identify outstanding Technology Education teachers who will serve as models for their colleagues and who could form a leadership core to affect change in the field. Teacher of the Year awards are available from elementary, middle, and high school. Each year VTEEA may recognize one teacher from each of the school levels. Teachers who are nominated for Teacher of the Year Awards should demonstrate the following evidence: * Exemplary teaching characteristics including subject-matter competence, enthusiasm for teaching, sensitivity to student learning needs, and good communication skills. * Teach activities or units of instruction using state and/or national standards. * An understanding of Technology and Engineering Education as basic education for all students. * Sustained professional growth in Technology and Engineering Education and in the art of teaching. * Ability to engage students in a hands-on/minds-on approach to learning about technology. * Ability to foster curiosity and generate excitement about learning to understand and apply technology concepts and practices. * A belief that all students should and can learn about technology and apply its principles in everyday life. * An understanding of the relationships between technology and other areas of study in the school. * An experimental and innovative attitude in their approach to teaching. * Participation in professional membership and leadership activities. ** Applicants for Elementary Program of the Year must also be active VCEC members. | ||||||

8 | Nomination Process: December 31 - Deadline for nominations. January 5 - Distribution of awards applications packet to nominees by Committee Chair. January 10 - VTEEA & ITEEA Membership status is verified. January 15 - Completed application packets (short-form) are submitted to the Committee Chair for distribution to Regional Presidents for regional committee review. February - Elementary level winners from previous year recognized at VCEC conference. March 1 - Regional winners are notified of their respective status in the award selection process. April 1 - Completed application packets (long-form) are submitted to the Committee Chair for distribution to state committee for review. April - Site visits by Committee Chair. May 1- State/National winners are notified of their respective status in the award selection process. June 1 - Confirmation of conference attendance by winner (plus guest) and administrator. July/August - Public announcement and awards are presented at the VTEEA Conference. |
