Aim1. To create a list of UK based learned societies and scientific organisations and their websites. A list containing these details will be released as an openly licensed data set. When the list is (relatively) complete and tided up, it will be released under an open license and I'll sign post to it from here.

Basis for inclusion on list1. The organisation or group should be a learned society or scientific organization. Although these aren’t defined terms, lots of people havea ‘feel’ for what whether or not an organisation is or isn’t one, and often an organisation claims itself to be one. The key boxes to tick here is that the organization must be a membership organization in some way linked the exploration of an area of research. I don’t want to include organisations who are solely professional bodies – although some learned societies also act in this way. There are lots of grey areas though and I’m very keen to explore them in the future – so if you aren’t sure, please do add it!

2. Based in the UK. This means the main physical base in the UK (ie the main contact address) and/or the organisation specifically stating that it is an organisation for either the whole UK or part of the UK.
7
An organisation will be in the UK if it has an English/Scottish charity commission number

How to find societies?
It can be difficult to find them if you don't know a specific name, but some tips include:
11
1. Look at the websites of international learned societies - they often mention UK specific societies.
12
2. Follow links on the websites of learned societies you know about. For instance the links page on the British Society for Matrix Biology includes a number of UK based societies: http://www.bsmb.ac.uk/links-page/. These are all included in the existing list, but such things occur on many other learned society pages
