Methodology & Explanation
12
Data sources
13
We obtain the data from the DVLA's publicly avilable vehicle enquiry service API, and the DVSA's MOT history API. These APIs provide access to the vehicle licensing database, which is the record of all licensed vehicles in the UK. The database is updated in near real time, and we refresh our data monthly to obtain the previous months' new registrations. The data we display covers all cars with a standard GB and NI registration mark. It does not capture any newly registered vehicles with personalised or non-standard registration plates. We display newly registered 'M1' vehicles, i.e. passenger cars.

16
Regional Breakdowns
17
We allocate new registrations into regions using the local memory tag of the vehicle registration mark (VRM) of each vehicle. Standard issue GB and NI number plates included characters that signify the location that a vehicle was registered. These characters indicate the proximity of the location that a vehicle is registered to the DVLA office where a vehicle was first registered. We have used this information to construct a statistical geography which comprises DVLA Regions. Inside each DVLA Region are several DVLA Areas. For example, cars with a number plate beginning 'L' have been first registered in the London DVLA Region, and will be attached to one of the three DVLA Areas inside the London DVLA Region. For a full description of each DVLA Area, see below.
