Summer Character Trait - Wisdom

There is a funny saying that illustrates the fundamental difference between knowledge and wisdom. "Knowledge is understanding that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad."

Silly, but when we apply this principle in our daily lives it can actually mean something pretty profound. It can become something like, "Knowledge is understanding that junk food is bad for me. Wisdom is fueling my body with proper nutrition", or "Knowledge is understanding that my friend doesn't hold confidence (keep private conversations private). Wisdom is being careful what I share with them."

When we take the things we "know" and transform them into things we "do", our lives can change significantly. Let's spend some time thinking about this over the summer!

For this assignment, I want you to come up with one "Knowledge is... / Wisdom is..." set of sentences as I have demonstrated above that has the power to transform an area of your life. On a properly formatted piece of paper, give me your two sentences with a detailed paragraph (200 word minimum) explaining how applying wisdom in this situation can be meaningful for you.

Remember, as high school students, the following will always be true about your Character assignments throughout the year:
- Paper must be headed properly with Name, Subject, and Week Due in the upper right-hand corner (using the header is good for this). Not doing so will result in a 5-point deduction beginning Week 4.

- Proper formatting and grammar are just as important in Character assignments as they are in other classes! Make sure you are proofreading your work and checking for capitalization and grammatical errors before submitting.

- When a minimum word count is given, assignments with shorter submissions will be returned for expansion.

- When a minimum word count is not provided, one-sentence answers are still not acceptable. All assignments should be fully and completely thought through and explained. There are no right or wrong answers in Character, but I do need/want to know your thoughts! One to three-sentence responses will always be returned for expansion (unless the assignment calls for a shorter answer).

Bring your assignment to class on Week 1 in September.

Memorize the Summer Character Trait and be prepared for a quiz on the definition and "I Wills" when we return in September.

Wisdom is making practical applications of truth in daily decisions.

I will listen to my parents and teachers.
I will learn from correction.
I will choose my friends carefully.
I will remember that there are consequences to all my actions.
I will ask, "What is the right thing to do?"
