Why do we dance? We dance because it’s the fastest, most direct route to the truth — not some big truth that belongs to everybody, but the get down and personal kind, the what’s-happening-in-me- right-now kind of truth. This is not always easy for us to access — we have to navigate some very deep past, as well as the probable futures we drum up to feed the fear that drives us round the same circles, day in and day out. We dance to hook up to the true genius— to seek refuge in our originality and our power to reinvent ourselves; to shed the past, forget the future and fall into the moment feet first. We dance to reclaim our brilliant ability to disappear in something bigger, something safe, a space without a critic or a judge or an analyst." Gabrielle Roth

So many young people don’t have access to dance and the arts as part of their education and upbringing, but at Darton College we believe it is vital that more children have opportunities to watch, be part of and perform dance. We need to make it as inherent in our culture as sport.
36
Through the Dance curriculum at DC, we have watched our learners grow in confidence and become more focussed, both in dance classes and at school. The excitement in the air after a performance makes us realize how magical it is for our learners to work in such a professional inspiring and exciting way.

What will I do?
39
You will be encouraged to: devise and adapt a variety of performance skills; refine and adapt existing techniques; perform set technical studies with style and accuracy; appreciate strengths and weaknesses; develop an understanding of body maintenance and anatomy; analyse and interpret professional dance works; increase knowledge of composition and choreography. Throughout the year your experience will be informed by a study of Dance which has an emphasis on the 3 strands of performance, choreography and appreciation.

In year 9, learners will have opted to complete 2 performance options per week for the whole year (Choosing from PE, Dance and Music). In 1 hour per week they will complete 6 modules of dance. At the end of each module they will be assessed in either performance or choreography
