This worksheet is the output of an employee-led effort to understand their organization's environmental impact -- the company is a cloud hosting provider with offices, data centers, employees (~550), and customers around the world. This project was completed in roughly 24 hours, as part of an internal hackathon, by a core group of 7 individuals from various teams and departments. Since the hackathon, we have continued to develop the tool in hopes that it may be a useful resource for others who wish to build more climate-conscious organizations. The process of reviewing this document and applying its analysis to a specific organization (or organizational department/operational unit) is an exercise in developing organizational self-awareness.

The purpose of this worksheet is to support folks in establishing an approximate, baseline understanding of the carbon footprint of their organization (or segment/department of an org) -- ie, perform a "carbon audit"

While exploring this spreadsheet, you can see formulas, calculations, and comments in various cells. By revealing the underlying math and providing as many explanations as possible, we hope this helps you better understand the fundamental variables that add up to your organization's total carbon footprint and their interconnectivity. There are many "carbon calculators" and other resources similar to this around the internet. We used many of them in this project and indicate which tools we used within these worksheets. We hope this resource is complementary to other tools from the global climate community.

If you'd like to edit cells (inputs) in the model to experiment and see results (outputs), please make a copy of the file by clicking "File" in the upper left menu and then clicking "Make a copy". By using a separate copy for your exploration and experimentation, we can maintain the foundational template for everyone to use as a starting point.
