CTTitle 1 School, Self-Contained Special Education Programhttps://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/2BJUNWFXS6K46?ref_=wl_shareHarwinton06791I work within a middle school as a teacher and case manager for students who are a part of our therapeutic behavioral program. Students are identified and placed in the program based on their need for more support in the school setting. Having students ranging from grades 5-8 means there are ever changing interests as the students grow and start figuring out who they want to be. Each student has an individualized program to help meet their needs in the public school system. This means materials need to be provided and created for reinforcement of skills. In order to provide incentives and rewards that the students are excited about, I often have to pay out of my own pocket. Ensuring that I’m able to provide the necessary supports for my students while also keeping up with the cost of life, has been my biggest challenge as a teacher.5-8 Special Education

Last year, students worked on creating videos and posters for the school, fulfilling orders each week. This year, we have created more class sections and we want to expand to cover all types of media, including graphic design and product-making. We want students to engage in the whole design process from start to finish, creating various items like t-shirts, cups, etc. Not only will this teach students the whole design process, but it will show them that they are capable of doing things that they never thought they could do. Meeting the social, emotional and educational needs of our students is an important and worthy task. One that most teachers are so excited and eager to take on however it can be very challenging. Our schools are under staffed and under served. This leads to our students biggest struggle having their social, emotional, and educational needs met. This is extremely difficult for one person to do with a group of 23 6/7 year olds including students with disabilities, students learning a new language and with other exceptional circumstances. I’ve sadly seen so many AMAZING teachers walk away because they are so defeated or literally ill from this job. I’ve also seen so many equally amazing teachers so burnt out that they struggle to show up fully for their students, families and themselves. The hardest thing for me is struggling to be present 100% of the school day for my students and meeting my students academic, behavioral, & emotional needs at school.
100% of students receive free breakfast and lunch every day at school and rely on these meals. I always have snacks and food available to my students, because we can’t expect students to learn successfully when they are hungry. Some of my students have inconsistent home situations, so I strive to have the most consistent classroom environment for my students. CTTitle 1 School, Most of our students receive free or reduced lunchhttps://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/9RWKMXFK6AGB?ref_=wl_shareSeymour06483Most of the time, as a teacher, I struggle with burnout and time. Most of my energy is put towards spending hours developing or creating a lesson that will grab the attention of my whole class. I don’t want to say it was easier in the past because teachers have always put their heart and soul into the lesson planning process and the lesson delivery. However, I do believe it has become more challenging for teachers to feel that their lesson has enough “glam and glitter” for all students to be fully interested and engaged. This takes a lot of our personal time and energy and when the days feel long, as they sometimes more often than not, burnout takes over quickly. This leads directly into there simply not being enough hours in a day or a week. We have a vision for ourselves and go into each school year envisioning the teacher we will be for our student. And, despite that vision, it is often clouded and fades away as we take on the responsibility of wearing MANY hats in our profession. It is a fulfilling profession and I couldn’t see myself doing anything else but it is a profession that is not made for all individuals. Teachers lean into those we understand us and do not judge us, those who can truly appreciate all that we do and those who support us each and every day for the passion that fills the four walls of our classroom with our students at the forefront of every decision and next step we take.

When I reflect on my five years of teaching, I would say there are two areas in which my students struggle the most. The first is finding a healthy balance between completing their given classroom tasks with a creative mindset without a willingness to do so without the gravitation towards classroom technology (chromebook). I want my students to be able to go an entire school day without asking to use technology. I am not naive to the fact that this is the direction that the world is going. However, I am always extremely concerned that students, at such a young age, do not have or want to have the stamniq, passion, drive, execution functioning or mindset to do anything without a device or technology in their presence.

The second thing my students struggle the most with, which I believe is a direct correlation to what’s above, is their social-emotional skills. My students, past, present or future, all struggle with using their communication and coping skills to address any situation. These are two skill areas that go beyond the classroom setting and need to be applied in personal and future professions. We as teachers receive Professional Development to learn and understand how to support our students each year. However, with the cloud of technology and our students easy access outside of school to devices such as phones, tablets, computers which provide them with access to social media, tv shows, video games, etc. Students, of all ages, are able to then access non-age appropriate material on extensive platform which is undoubtedly directly effecting their ability to communicate and socialize. It is a large concern of mine as a teacher as I see the unhealthy effects of it in the classroom for students social-emotionally.

Because we work so much with sensory regulation, behavior management and various social skills we need many resources and products that are just not ‘typical’ school items and not provided by our public school system. This ranges from sensory fidgets and flexible seating to toys and crafts for positive reinforcements incentives and preferred break times. Last year was my first year teaching this program and because of this I struggled most with having to buy a lot of these things myself, along with the help of my teacher assistants, just to get the bare minimum we needed. And when we didn’t have the products we needed we saw a huge uptick in student behavior and deregulation which was also a struggle. I wish I could do more to support my students as my class list is nearly doubling this year. Any contribution and support would truly be a blessing. Thank you so much for all that you do for teachers!3-5 Social Emotional Special Education

CTTitle 1 School, Most of our students receive free or reduced lunchhttps://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/38QX41MCK6S1?ref_=wl_shareNorwalk06851I struggle most with finding balance. I want to give my students all of my attention and all of the resources that they deserve. However, I struggle with finding balance: I am also a mom, sister, and wife, and I recognize that my family deserves the same attention, not to mention time for myself, too. I’m working to find balance so that all parties get the best that I can give, including myself.

My kids are struggling with finding themselves and understanding their place in the world: they’re 10 and 11, and in addition to dealing with the typical social and emotion issues of that age group, exposure to social media has them worried about other issues and facing influences far-beyond their grasp.

CTTitle 1 School, Most of our students receive free or reduced lunchhttps://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/1CCGHDVBW2P9E?ref_=wl_shareFairfield 06824The greatest struggle for my students, at least from my observation, is balancing their desire to learn meaningfully and develop their aptitude towards a career with other, more instantly gratifying stimuli. Often times Tik Tok and Snapchat, frivolous drama with friends, and the desire to be ‘Instagram perfect’ constantly stands in the way of them focusing intently on more far off, long-term gratifying projects.

For me, the hardest part of being a teacher is staying a teacher. The financial strain created by our salary relative to living costs in our area is driving me to consider leaving the profession I love. Last year, I wanted - on numerous occasions- to make food for my students, only to be prevented from doing so by other budgetary needs. Not to toot my own horn, but the kids in my program love when I cook for them, and not getting to do so was a damper on the year. I’d like to enhance my engineering class with kits for our group, but once again I’m in a position of choosing between supplementing my students’ needs and paying my student loans.

Our families are not in a position to buy supplies for students. Basic supplies like crayons, markers, folders, notebooks are purchased by me as best I can! For this reason, I do “shared table” supplies so a box of crayons is shared at one table amongst 5-6 students. Yes, our classroom sizes are 25+. I mainstream students from a TASC room so at one time I can have up to 30 4th graders in my room. We make do but we are not a district sending out supply lists to students, we are resourceful but being able to give NEW supplies to these students and seeing their reaction is priceless. I also have clothing on my wishlist as my students are often in need of that as well. Anything helps! Thank you for the chance! 4th Grade

The majority of what is in my classroom is from donations that I received from family and friends and anything else needed comes from myself. As you can imagine, this makes it difficult to keep up with the amount of supplies needed.

Aside from the basic supplies pf pencils, crayons and markers. My students are also in a position where they come in without lunches and snacks and often even without backpacks and coats. My list includes snacks to keep in the classroom as well as extra clothes to distribute as needed. I truly try to make this space and welcoming as possible because for many this is like their home.
