What is your name? What questions or comments do you have for this presenter?
2
Andrew RossIt sounds like you achieved a really nice outcome in a difficult situation; you're obviously not going to solve the entirety of TA training over six days. How are you addressing the issue of ongoing training and support? Curricular tracks for the TAs to complete in various skillsets? Are you planning on developing a self-paced, asynchronous set of materials and work for TAs in the coming semesters and years?

Rebecca YeagerThis was a great presentation! Thanks for sharing!

Xiao TanThank you for the wonderful presentation. I like the idea of implementing the flip classroom strategy in TA orientation.

Hope AndersonThank you, all! Yes, the goal is to take the Canvas modules, make necessary changes, and create a series of self-paced modules that be used for continued professional development. We also have weekly or bi-weekly Zoom meetings by level and monthly Zoom meetings for the whole program at which we address strategies for the topics and tasks of each unit, as well as tips for lesson planning, encouraging participation on Zoom, grading efficiently, etc. And we have the methods course and practicum (unfortunately only one semester, but still useful) for the new TAs. I'd love more suggestions for ongoing professional development!

BryanYou sort of touched upon this, but assuming that at some point we DO go back to primarily "pre-COVID" types of instruction, which of aspects of what you did this summer will likely remain in place?
7
Hope AndersonHi Bryan, I think having the flipped approach is still going to be helpful, both for additional learning and for modeling the flipped classroom, even if we end up cutting back somewhat on the Canvas content due to increased efficiency or a revised schedule of in-person sessions. Even if there are in-person sessions the week before classes as usual, we could still use TAs' feedback to have Zoom sessions earlier in the summer so they can start working on their Canvas shells, etc., rather than being rushed at the last minute. Thanks!
