JSNE Pathshala Teaching and Learning guidelines

Sutra curriculum. Our goal is to advance as much Sutra learning in early years. The Sutra meanings can be taught later in higher levels but take advantage of helping students achieve milestones with Sutra Extension very early on. We may find less percentage of students/ parents enthusiastic in this area but our goal is to introduce and assist with Sutra learning more in Rookies, L1, L2, L3. Teachers can use creativity, resources, and recognitions to maintain momentum.

Age appropriateness. The main objective of this guideline is to make sure we have age level appropriate focus and deliverables. Suggested books are listed to guide level-appropriate depth of the topic. Teachers can use their creativity and methodologies to effectively teach topics with developmentally appropriate depth for each level. Teaching the right content for the right age, enables “goldilocks” learning. If it’s too difficult, we lose students' attention. If it’s too easy, we also lose students’ attention. Even more so with Jainism, many of our concepts are deep and rich - teaching them too early could cause confusion, misuse, and misunderstanding our own philosophy.

Ghabaro activities. An important element of having Pathshala at Derasar is to leverage the ambience and feel of auspicious vibrations at the Derasar. This is especially relevant for Rookies, L1, L2 and L3. Our students generally don't get to come to Derasar frequently. Pathshala is a wonderful opportunity to instill sanskar at an early age. For example, L3 can perform Chaityavandan in sessions, L4 can perform Samayik in sessions, R, L1 and L2 can use the Gabharo area for various hands-on/ fun activities - singing stutis and stavans, do Poojas, create Sathiyos, show Dreams, do festival-specific activities, etc. We can coordinate scheduling the Gabharo area and resources accordingly.

Engaging participation. Engage the class with interactive and creative activities, including games, projects, and allowing students to also present while teachers facilitate. Make the content relevant and relatable to our students' daily lives. Emphasize quality over quantity of learning. Alternate curriculum every other year to entice the more advanced learners, while repeating annually only the most important for all learners.
