|Welcome to Demac's Exalted Character Creation Tool, or DECCT for short. DECCT is a spreadsheet that is designed to facilitate the character creation process in Exalted 3rd Edition. |
Getting Started: You will need to make a copy of this Google Sheet to your own free google drive account. That is because you will need to have edit permissions to run the scripts and edit the cells that this tool uses. I cannot give those permissions to everyone on this sheet because this sheet is the template and any edits to it will result in a changed sheet for the next person trying to use this tool. This also means that you will likely get messages from Google Sheets about the scripts when you try to run them for the first time on a new character. You will need to approve the use of the scripts for that copy of the sheet.
Below are some features of the worksheet that you should familiarize yourself with before you start:
• The DECCT Menu, Manage Character Menu, and Customization Menu are specifically created to facilitate easy use of the spreadsheet.
o DECCT Menu
"View Instructions" opens this sheet and closes all other sheets in the spreadsheet.
"View Printable Sheets" automatically opens a series of sheets that have been formatted for printing a character sheet. These sheets are only accurate once the new character has been converted to an experienced character as per function on the Manage Character Menu.
“Reset Options” allow you to either reset the character sheet based on current character generation rules, or to reset custom character generation rules to default.
o Manage Character Menu
"Edit New Character" or "Edit Experienced Character" options allow you to make adjustments to your character sheets.
“View Bonus Point Allocation” takes you to the "Bonus Point Expenditure" sheet which displays the most efficient way to spend your bonus points to generate your current character. This option is only available for new characters.
"Manage XP and Crafting Projects" allows you to manage your expentiures. While most XP is automatically calculated, you can fine tune it with the refund and Misc Exenditure columns. This option is only available to experienced characters.
"Convert to XP" will convert a new character created with bonus points into an character ready to have experience points added to it. This option is only available to new characters and it is necessary to go through this process for the prinatable character sheets to be accurate.
"Save XP Exenditures" will allow you to save the experience awards and expenditures you've made up to that point for a character. This option is only available to experienced characters.
o Customization Menu
"Custom Character Generation Rules" allows you to quickly adjust the free ranks awarded at character creation.
"Engage the Exigence" allows you to creat a new type of character for Exalted 3e.
"Edit Calculation Sheets" allows you to alter the calculation process for various functions in DECCT.
• Bonus Points, Charms, and other important numbers for character creation are tracked on each of the “Character Generation” pages in the top, right-hand corner.
• Experience Expenditures are tracked on each of the "Character Trait" pages in the top, right-hand corner.
o DECCT can handle using regular XP and splat specific XP to purchase new traits automatically. However, if some other resource is used to purchase the trait, like crafting XP or a free charm, you will need to refund the trait's cost in XP on the XP Management page.
• Exalted is not my product or my intellectual property. It is the intellectual property of White Wolf Publishing and is currently licensed to Onyx Path Publishing.
DECCT is capable of handling functions:
• Martial Arts attacks are calculated using the highest Martial Arts ability.
• Attacks made with a Martial Arts ability rated lower than your Highest Martial Arts ability.
o Follow the same steps if you were making an attack with a non-combat ability except as follows:
Cells containing the various martial arts abilities are named “Martial_Arts_Ability_1”, “Martial_Arts_Ability_2”, “Martial_Arts_Ability_3”, “Martial_Arts_Ability_4”, and “Martial_Arts_Ability_5”. These correlate to the order in which they appear on sheet and their rankings with respect to each other. Thus Martial_Arts_Ability_4, may be higher than Martial_Arts_Ability_1.
• Attacks made with non-combat abilities.
o Example: The Burning Name
The withering attack is calculated using decisive attacks and then adding the weapon Generation to the decisive attack pools.
To set up an attack using a non-combat ability (such as Occult), go to the “Character Generation – Attributes and Abilities” sheet and insert formula into the “Special” field on the Decisive Attack chart. This formula should indicate the Generation used to calculate the decisive attack pool without relevant specialties (for example, the formula for The Burning Name would read “=Intelligence + Occult”).
When setting up the Withering Attack on the “Character Generation – Equipment” sheet, be sure to assign the Combat Ability as “Special”.
Craft follows the same naming rules as Martial Arts.
• Soak, Health Levels and Spells added from Charms and Merits
o Extra Health Levels are added based on the number of purchases of the “Ox-Body Technique” charm as well as the Giant merit.
o Calculations for the number of charms and spells remaining as well as those purchased with BP automatically account for the free spells awarded with sorcery charms.
o Charm Names and Merits must be spelled out exactly as they are in the Exalted 3e core book (or other relevant resources). To this end, DECCT will offer a list of charm and merit names that can be used. The list of charm names only contains charms that have calculations attached to them for the Exalt Type you've chosen.
For example, when playing Solars, the list of charms will contain only the Sorcery/Necromancy charms and Ox-Body Technique. When playing Dragon-Blooded, the charm list will contain those 7 options plus the names of all the Dragon-Bloody Excellency charms since those are required to be spelled correctly for the excellency marker to appear next to the appropriate ability.
IMPORTANT: Charm name fields and Merit name fields DO NOT require you to use an input on their respective lists. The names on those lists are only suggestions.
• Weapon Tags
o Attack and Damage pools automatically change when relevant tags are added to the weapon.
o Tags must be spelled out exactly as they are in the Exalted 3e core book (or other relevant resources).
• Automatic Bonus Point and Experience Point expenditure calculation.
• Easy chaning of character creation rules from rules for newly exalted, essence 1 characters to more experienced Essence 2 characters.
I owe thanks to the following people.
The players who play at my table and allow me to GM for them for providing me with input.
Especially to my lovely wife who, apart from being a player at my table, created pdf character sheets created for our group which formed the design of the printable pdfs.
Unsung Hero, for his feedback on v1.0
In the interest of providing a tool that does not need any purchase of software to use, DECCT v2 was done entirely in Google Sheets. I will no longer be producing an Excel version of this tool because I simply do not wish to double my work (scripts in Google Sheets uses Java Script while Excel uses as form of Visual Basic).
I have no intentions of including a library of charms in this workbook that enforces the purchase prerequisites. This is for the following reasons:
• This tool is designed to promote easy customization for homebrewed material as well as updating the sheet to future releases of splats (playable character types).
• I am one man. I do not have the time and energy to catalog every charm in this game. If such a database was provided to me, then I would consider including it as long as doing so would not create difficulties in adding custom charms/spells/evocations.
o To that end, charm lists and merit lists, while created using data validation rules, will only generate a warning flag when an input falls outside of them.
The word “Ping” is used to indicate “Overwhelming Damage”. This term is used as slang for “Overwhelming Damage” on the Exalted Forums (as well as several other corners in the Internet where Exalted is discussed). The slang is used in the tool because space is at a premium when designing character sheets and “Ping” is a much shorter word than “Overwhelming”.
