3
David NgoThere are those who crave to create their own academic path, who desire the unconventional. The IDM program (has given me) and gives these future students the opportunity to experience the unconventional college education that fits their unconvnetional interests, values, and visions.Senior 2013, IDM Behavior Design Major
4
Karissa PaddieStanford should be proud to offer the flexibility that IDM offers.Senior 2013
5
Andrew MartinThe IDM(EN) program allows self driven students the ability to create their own interdisciplinary majors combining their various interests. Through the Department of Engineering, I was able to create a major combining my interests in Product Design, Computer Science, and Psychology. The IDM program should stick around just like the IDMEN program!Senior 2013, IDMEN Interaction Design Engineering

Jason van der MerweOne of the reasons I was attracted to Stanford was the academic freedom. While I have found a major and concentration that fits me well, I often debated designing my own. Luckily, I found a spot perfect for me, but not all students have that same experience. IDMs are a great way to encourage students to pursue their academic and intellectual interests, whatever they may be. IDMs say that Stanford doesn't care about the system, but about helping students achieve their dreams and goals.Sophomore, 2015
7
Herry LianI've seen the effect IDM has on you, and how it has developed you into the person you are today. I want to support your cause, so that others can also reach their dreams like you did.Senior 2013Freeze the 2nd line, not the first. It makes it hard to read as you get more ppl and they have to scroll up and down

Nathan BakerOne of Stanford's greatest assets is its focus on innovation. When students are deprived of the ability to shape their future by designing their own major, students lose out and so does the university's culture of innovation. Senior 2013, IR major, Chinese Minor
9
Stephen Quinonez"The wind of freedom blows". Stanford is a place of intellectual freedom. IDM is a great way for students to be creative with their own education and pursue what they're really passionate about.Senior 2013
10
Sharleen TuThe IDM program gives Stanford students the freedom to pursue what they really truly are passionate about without confining themselves to pre-set majors/concentrations. It promotes an interdisciplinary education and provides the most flexibility in creating the holistic academic foundation that students seek in choosing to come to such a wonderful university.Junior 2014, planning on declaring an IDMEN in Interaction Design this quarter
11
Chris BarberThe IDM program gives Stanford students the possibility to personally forge a degree based around the classes that will provide value to THEM. Stanford has a grounding philosophy in selecting a class of diverse individuals - and this is embodied in offering individuals the opportunity to study an individually designed degree that may not fit within the context of what the university already offers. With this IDM program, students are given the tools to create something for themselves, and to learn something that they believe is great, which is extremely fitting in this University that is rich in both creation and learning.Freshman 2016, Behavior Design or Similar or possibly CS HCI - early stages now.

Cameron TeitelmanIndividualized and personalized education is the future of education. This is the core insight behind online education. Stanford has a strong strategic focus on online education given its appointment of a dean of online. Stanford would be folly to eliminate this mechanism for personlized education2010

Anjan KattaIDM is the reason I choose this school.2016

David HermanOkay, so my response became a monster of its own. For the sake of reading/cleanliness of this page, here's a link to it. Sorry for the length!2016
15
Anjney MidhaIt would be presumptuous of the university to assume that every single student at this great school falls into a pre-determined academic category. The IDM has beeen Stanford's way of respecting those bold enough to look outside the contraints of career, friends and society to pursue their true intellectual interests. Reneging on this would be a true failure on Stanford's part to let the winds of freedom blow.2015
16
Elaine ZhouStanford thrives on creativity and innovation, "Let the wind of freedom blow." IDM allows students to think and act outside the box, disregarding the common notions of pre-determined academic majors. What are now common and popular majors (PD, STS, HumBio) were once unorthodox and unheard of and have now solidified their place in our curriculum. Discontinuing IDM prevents future students from the opportunity to grow and mature into their interests. Sophomore 2015

Katherina NguyenEducation is ultimately meant to empower people to better design their lives. Students have a right to shape the educational tools best suited to help them succeed. Sometimes, using pre-made academic building blocks will not do. If Stanford's true mission is to help Stanford students succeed in whatever they choose to do in life, they should respect this and focus on making the IDM "educational experience" better through institutional support and resources. IDM is not just a program, it is a statement of Stanford culture.STS 2011IDM is awesome & should be publicized more! I didn't hear about it until much later; I chose STS because it was the closest thing to IDM but had more departmental structure.
18
Andrew DaoAny student who takes the initiative to design a major and then get it approved probably exhibits the kind of drive Stanford hopes its student base showed more of. It'd be a poorly thought out move to eliminate this outlet to identify such students and enable them to truly pursue their passionsMS&E 2010

Lucy Dikeou"I want Stanford students to have the opportunity to design their own majors that this program provides" IR 2014 considering IDM
20
James Patton JonesI am finding out with every class I take it is more important to learn how to think and how to learn as opposed to only taking classes and going along with the motions. The major requirements do not fit my individual passions or interests, and being able to create a major that motivates me to put in my best effort is invaluable so that I am prepared to be an active and creative individual after college.
21
Luke KnepperI think that the opportunity to do an IDM attracts some top students to Stanford that we would otherwise miss.2014 CS
22
Daniel Koning"If SymSys did not exist, it would have been necessary to invent it." -- Voltaire (approximately)

That is to say that I've always appreciated the IDM program, even though my major isn't individually designed. I chose my major based on its similarity to the course of study I wanted to undertake, instead of the other way around, and if I hadn't found a near-perfect fit I would have come up with my own.
2014, Symbolic Systems

Becky Dru"I want Stanford students to have the opportunity to design their own majors that this program provides" (Default Message if you don't know what to write)2013, Human Biology
24
Brielle ButlerIt allows students to acquire the knowledge and skills they desire instead of the ones required to have a specific major written on their diploma.2016
25
Ilya MuzykantskiyI would like to major in something like neuroscience, but no major currently achieves what I want ot get out of the UG experience2016 IDM in Neuro (hopefully)
26
Kevin MoThere's no reason not to allow it. Though I'd like to know more deeply about the rationale for cutting it. If it is simply cut just to limit the amount of majors, then IDMs should just be made more competitive/difficult to create. But cutting IDMs is a limit to student creativity and self initiative, two ideals that Stanford embodies.2012 in Biology
27
Navid ChowdhuryIf done with proper supervision from Stanford, IDM can be the most popular option among Stanford students.2013 CEE

Elahe PopatIf I had known more about IDM, I would have done it and think that future students should be able to make the most of all the fantastic Stanford opportunities in a way that is the most meaningful and valuable to them2013 Communication
32
Brian OmbongaThe wind of freedom should continue to blow through campus. Students who want to march to the beat of their own drum shouldn't be prohibited from doing so. I want Stanford students to have the opportunity to design their own majors that this program provides. I support this major! 2013 Undeclared
33
Meghan BowlerIDM is a major reason I chose to come to Stanford. If my major had not come into being my sophomore year, I would have been an IDM major. There is no good reason to limit the creativity of motivated and intelligent students; Stanford would be doing itself a disservice in eliminating IDM. 2012 Bioengineering

Ruthie ArbeiterOn the contrary, I think IDM should be advertised to more students - I certainly would have considered this option, had I known as a freshman that it existed. If Stanford truly wants to encourage students to think outside the box, explore and apply interdisciplinary fields of study, and discover the enduring value of the humanities in our modern world, then it is crucial for Stanford to sustain a strong humanities IDM program.2012 English
36
Dan BrownI want to be able to design my own major. I don't know enough yet about which major could best fit my academic interests, but if I were to find that my interests don't fit a major I would want to be able to put in the extra work to create a program that is meaningful and important to me.2018 Considering SYMSYS because there's no more IDM
