In Person-St. Louis, Missouri
The unique Closing the Learning Gaps institute is designed to speed up learning for all students to grade level and beyond by focusing collaborative team actions in a Professional Learning Community at Work® and teacher instructional practices in the classroom. This institute is led by renowned authors, thought leaders, and practitioners with proven track records of results in closing the achievement gap.

Many articles, blogs, books, podcasts, and webinars have been written and shared for the purpose of reiterating the need to close student achievement gaps—and yet, the process and progress in closing these gaps has been out of reach. Closing achievement gaps is multifaceted and requires specific actions focused on acceleration and leveling up strategies to grow student learning to grade level proficiency or beyond. Use tools to unpack standards, deeply understand and create learning progressions, and use higher-level cognitive demand tasks in class every day.
Ensure a multitiered system of supports exists for all students with intentional and targeted outcomes in all three tiers.

Teaching Students to Ask Their Own Questions: Best Practices in the Question Formulation Technique
Harvard Graduate School of Education
GeneralK-12Online-AsynchronousAsking questions is an essential — yet often overlooked — lifelong learning skill. When we teach our students to formulate effective questions, we open up powerful pathways for engaged, self-directed learning. Questioning helps students effectively pursue their interests, navigate complex situations, solve problems, and assess print and online media content with a critical eye. They grow more confident as they prepare to contribute to a robust democracy.

The Question Formulation Technique (QFT) is a deceptively simple, practical, adaptable method that helps students become more sophisticated thinkers and problem-solvers. In this three-week online workshop, you’ll learn to harness the power of QFT with its original developers, Luz Santana and Dan Rothstein, co-directors of the Right Question Institute and co-authors of Make Just One Change: Teach Students to Ask Their Own Questions (Harvard Education Press).

This program expands on Santana and Rothstein’s original work by demonstrating how to adapt the QFT to a wide range of learning environments. Sarah Westbrook, the Right Question Institute’s director of professional learning, oversees this program. She draws on the wisdom of thousands of teachers to help you develop QFT strategies for your own classroom.

Articulating the Intangibles of Teaching: Aligning Your Purpose and Practice for Instructional LeadershipHarvard Graduate School of EducationGeneralK-12Online-AsynchronousThe work of teaching is artful, complex, and situated in context. But the pace of teaching can keep excellent practice shrouded in mystery. As teachers navigate a given day – planning their lessons, making thousands of in-the-moment decisions, and supporting students, colleagues, and families – their individual strengths power their classrooms. Yet, to deepen their own practice and that of others, educators need to be able to share their knowledge, insights, and questions. They need to make what is intangible, tangible.

Articulating the Intangibles of Teaching: Aligning Your Purpose and Practice for Instructional Leadership is designed to help you make the intangible elements of teaching practice clear and accessible. By aligning your purpose and practice, you will be able to improve your own teaching. And you’ll be able to define and share your language of practice with students, parents, and colleagues.

Given the dynamic nature of the classroom, you need to work skillfully to provide your students with the best instruction possible. To do that, you must also ensure that you get the support you need. Defining and understanding your purpose helps you become a better teacher or teacher leader. And it provides crucial support as you face uncertainty and competing demands. In this course, you’ll join Harvard faculty, who work directly with beginning and veteran teachers to hone their teaching and instructional leadership practice. You’ll contribute your own expertise and learn from your fellow practitioners as you address the following questions:

How do we make great teaching visible so that it can be reflected on and shared beyond our classrooms to improve our personal practice and that of others?
More importantly, how do we do that without compromising the complexity of content, context, and relationships inherent in individual classrooms and instructional decisions?
The course is divided into six one-week modules that traverse the layers of practice that inform great teaching. Each week consists of approximately three hours of online work and one practice challenge, during which you’ll apply learning in your real-world context. Through the weekly modules you’ll uncover the why, what, and how of your instruction. And you’ll excavate the intangibles of teaching to align mission, vision, methods, decisions, and student work in a comprehensive, personal language of practice.
