Course Overview

This course fully supports the nine competencies as recommended by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. The lessons align with "Wisconsin's Developmental Guidance Model" and will align with "The Wisconsin Comprehensive School Counseling Model Student Content Standards" when the final draft is approved by the Department of Public Instruction. It also supports related standards from the "Wisconsin Model Academic Standards" for Behavioral Sciences and English/Language Arts at this grade level. It also is the format for the registration process for students that will attend Arrowhead High School.

This unit educates students about how to make themselves and their schools safer through anti-bullying efforts. At this level students learn concrete concepts necessary to recognize and deal with the issues of the multiple kinds of bullying/harassment. They also explore more abstract concepts of power and influence and how to manage and direct their power for the common good.

Students will explore a wide range of careers and discover for these careers, the required skills, education/preparation, job environment, post-secondary offerings for the career (actual schools), employment statistics, salaries and much more. The exploration of such careers will take place through the use of a number of job related personality/skills/job environment inventories. This unit will also help students make connections between long-term and short-term educational goals and career goals.

This ATODA (Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Abuse) Prevention Unit is designed to be taught in tandem with the health education department. The guidance department offers classes that familiarize eighth grade students with the effects the use of drugs and alcohol on a teen's body including specifics about the effect on the brain regarding learning and socialization. Also the relationship between the use of controlled substances and early death by all causes including suicide. Alcohol and drugs that are currently found to be problematic with youth will be topics for this unit. Also taught will be the legal consequences of substance use.
