GENERAL FILM REVIEW (Trailer)AUDIO

BLTOn January 15, 2009, the world witnessed the “Miracle on the Hudson” when Captain “Sully” Sullenberger glided his disabled plane onto the frigid waters of the Hudson River, saving the lives of all 155 aboard. However, even as Sully was being heralded by the public and the media for his unprecedented feat of aviation skill, an investigation was unfolding that threatened to destroy his reputation and his career.

BLTSULLY and Christian Virtue

Sully wasn't born a savior - he became one through intentional discipline and practice over time.

SFX #1: Interview with Katie Couric
-- "I was sure I could do it."
-- -- Too much confidence...or just right?
-- "I don't feel like a hero. I'm just a man who was doing his job."
-- -- It already felt natural. It was instinct. He didn't have to think, he just had to do.
-- "Forty-two. It's been my life. My whole life."
-- -- He's had time to fall and get back up.

What Skiles had to look up in the QRH (Quick Reference Handbook) - "I had the QRH in my hand!" - Sully had already written them on his heart.
-- Psalm 119:9-16 NLT (emphasis on verse 11)
-- It had become a part of his second nature over time...through trial and error...knowledge and wisdom...learning from mistakes...
-- Jesus is the Word > Sully has Jesus on his heart and has walked with him for forty-two years.

Sully's "second nature" is akin to Virtue. (AFTER YOU BELIEVE by NT Wright)
-- “Virtue is what happens when someone has made a thousand small choices requiring effort and concentration to do something which is good and right, but which doesn't come naturally. And then, on the thousand and first time, when it really matters, they find that they do what's required automatically. Virtue is what happens when wise and courageous choices become second nature.”

Paul describes this "second nature" as new clothes.
-- Galatians 3:27 - "Putting on new clothes."
-- -- Even though they won't fit at first, we as Christians will grow into them
-- -- Even Sully didn't "fit" into the Captain's uniform at first - he had to grow into it. [SFX #2]
Psalm 119:9-16 NLT

How can a young person stay pure?
By obeying your word.
I have tried hard to find you—
don’t let me wander from your commands.

11 I have hidden your word in my heart,
that I might not sin against you.

I praise you, O Lord;
teach me your decrees.
I have recited aloud
all the regulations you have given us.
I have rejoiced in your laws
as much as in riches.
I will study your commandments
and reflect on your ways.
I will delight in your decrees
and not forget your word.

KEY TEXT
Galatians 3:27 NLT
And all who have been united with Christ in baptism have put on Christ, like putting on new clothes.
SFX #1: 14:00 - 14:47
It was obvious it was a critical situation...losing thrust in both engines at a low altitude over one of the most densely populated areas on the planet. | But choosing to land on the Hudson...that was still a big "if." | I was sure I could do it. | You were? | Yes. | How do you feel when people call you a hero? | I don't feel like a hero. I'm just a man who was doing his job. | The right man for the job at the right time. You've been flying for, what, nearly forty years? | Forty-two. It's been my life. My whole life.

SFX #2: 1:04:20 - 1:04:42
I got shaving cream, razor blades, toothpaste, and new clothes. | What, did you think we were ninjas? | Kmart was the only store open. It's Queens. It's 10:00 in the evening. You find a Brooks Brothers. | Yeah. Sully, what are you even still doing in uniform? | Ah, you know, I don't know.

mhWhatever happens, fly the plane. Discipled to look like Jesus.

The passengers were saved via water by the sacrifice and faithfulness of Sully.

Captain Sully wakes from a nightmare distraught and distracted. There was indeed a forced water landing.

“You think you’re going to die; that’s what you think. And then, miraculously, you don't. Thank you, captain. Thank you. Thank you."

SOUND BITE 1 - Water landing. We knew what we were trying to execute.

Everything is unprecedented until it happens for the 1st time

SOUND BITE 2 - No matter what’s happening fly the airplane.

A pilot never stops acquiring knowledge. You’ll make mistakes; everyone does. Just learn from them.

SOUND BITE 3 - I got a count, Sully: 155

THE ARK! JESUS IS THE ARK.

Every. Single. Person. On. That. Plane. SURVIVED.
1 Peter 3:12-22 NASB
“For the eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous,
And His ears attend to their prayer,
But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”
Who is there to harm you if you prove zealous for what is good? But even if you should suffer for the sake of righteousness, you are blessed. And do not fear their intimidation, and do not be troubled, but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence; and keep a good conscience so that in the thing in which you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ will be put to shame. For it is better, if God should will it so, that you suffer for doing what is right rather than for doing what is wrong. For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might BRING US to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit; in which also He went and made proclamation to the spirits now in prison, who once were disobedient, when the patience of God kept waiting in the days of Noah, during the construction of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, WERE BROUGHT safely through the water. Corresponding to that, baptism now saves you—not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience—THROUGH THE RESURRECTION of Jesus Christ, who is at the right hand of God, having gone into heaven, after angels and authorities and powers had been subjected to Him.

Hebrews 3:1-6 NRSV
Therefore, brothers and sisters, holy partners in a heavenly calling, consider that Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession, was faithful to the one who appointed him, just as Moses also “was faithful in all God’s house.” Yet Jesus is worthy of more glory than Moses, just as the builder of a house has more honor than the house itself. (For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God.) Now Moses was faithful in all God’s house as a servant, to testify to the things that would be spoken later. Christ, however, was faithful over God’s house as a son, and we are his house if we hold firm the confidence and the pride that belong to hope.

1 Peter 3:21 NKJV
There is also an antitype which now saves us—baptism (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,

John 10:28 NIV
I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand.
SOUND BITE 1 - Water landing. We knew what we were trying to execute.

SOUND BITE 2 - No matter what happens, fly the airplane. And smile.

SOUND BITE 3 - I got a count, Sully: 155.

PS Philip Comment on SUPER 8: Forgiveness and Compassion | FCC 128Hey guys, glad you covered Super 8, which is an all-time favorite of mine. One thing I get from the film is in regards to Philippians 3:10-14 "My aim is to know him, to experience the power of his resurrection, to share in his sufferings, and to be like him in his death, and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead. Not that I have already attained this—that is, I have not already been perfected—but I strive to lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus also laid hold of me. Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself to have attained this. Instead I am single-minded: Forgetting the things that are behind and reaching out for the things that are ahead, with this goal in mind, I strive toward the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus."(NET)

While we all experience pain & suffering, it's so important to keep living for God, and not to be held captive by the tragedies in our past.

Love the show guys! #muhweeladgimli

PS Ron via email - fcc@gctnetwork.comSuperior 8

Greetings and felicitations, Michael and Brenden,

Thanks for another incredible job digging deeply and tunneling through the movie Super 8. I too was fond of this movie as it was a trip down memory lane. it reminded me a lot of E.T. As you stated, one must be mindful of the language with this, but your research and analysis was enough to overcome any negative elements. Once again, thanks for your dedication to your craft.

Guys did you notice that our own Sheriff's Deputy Jackson Lamb (played by the same guy from the TV show "Early Edition”),who is so rigidly unforgiving, is the "Law Man" which I believe he wasn't always such. One day he was born as "Baby Lamb" but has grown up into the law man we see in the film. Something happened to make him this way. Let us all strive to have compassion and not become hard hearted or unforgiving. I now follow this up with Joe Lamb ( young man of mercy) who "doesn't get" his father the law man. There's something to mercy and compassion not getting on well with Mr. Legality.

Charlie's family reminded me of the Weasley family from Harry potter in their care for another child in need ...and in the pleasant chaos of family life.

Great show as always!
All the best,

Rrrrrron

P.S.

Note that in this movie as in life, drug use takes you out of the real action and in the end can make you a laughing stock.

Just sayin...
