42 | How it works: This calculator tries to determine the rating of a ride by striking a balance between various ride properties in a logical way. It accounts for the diminishing returns of prestige at high values, and accounts for long durations leading to long queue times. Excitement / Fear / Nausea values are also considered and added to the result. While the rating is arbitrary, the calculations have been given a lot of thought. The formula, explained in English: Ticket price: Prestige / 33.3 First, the ticket price is calculated. Prestige/33.3 will give us the optimal price at which guests will not complain about the price of the ride. You can safely raise the price slightly above this number (recommended if the queue is full); you'll just get a few guests (~5%) avoiding the ride for being too expensive. $ Per Minute: Ticket Price / Duration Now that we have the ticket price and the duration we can calculate the $ Per Minute stat. This stat forms the base value of the rating system. On its own, $PM is a good metric by which you can judge the quality of a ride. In fact, if your queue is always full no matter what, you can get by using this metric alone. If however you have a fairly active park with a lot of competing rides (i.e. all parks), there's more to it than that. If the prestige rating is too low people won't be interested in taking the ride to begin with. If queue times are too long people will turn around and walk away. If the nausea rating is too high you'll cater only to people with a high stomach tolerance for bad design. Hence the purpose of this calculator. Once we have the $ Per Minute stat, we weigh the following: Prestige If the ride's prestige is low (currently defined as anything below 800) there is a rating penalty. This is because the lower the ride's prestige, the fewer people will know about it and want to go on it. Consider it a popularity rating. Prestige also directly affects the ticket price, so it's a good stat to boost. However, there are diminishing returns to adding prestige, and you really only need to get over a certain number (~800 or so) for the ride to be very popular. Anything over 800 does little to add to its popularity, and only increases its ticket price. Duration At low values of prestige (<600) and duration (<60), increasing both (while maintaining the same $ Per Minute stat) is a good thing. A high prestige rating means more people will go on the ride. However, increasing the prestige has diminishing returns, and increasing the duration has incremental penalties as too-long queue times is a turn-off for potential riders. Excitement, Fear, Nausea (E/F/N) These add bonus (or penalty) points to the rating depending on their values. Currently Excitement is not valued at all, but Fear and Nausea values impact the rating of the ride. | ||||||||||||||||
