Population Data - v5 via Gapminder
2
About this fileThis file has multiple sheets with data for one or more indicators used by Gapminder. In this sheet below you'll first find an overview of the indicators (measures) and the list of underlying sources. The actual data we use, is found in the sheet(s) labeled "data-...".
This file is also a documentation of the data process. To follow how the data was transformed from the original sources, start in the sheet to the far right, which holds the input data. You can then follow the process step by step, by looking at the formulas in the sheets from right to left, until you reach the output in the "data-..." sheets.

Dataset description:Our population data is divided into two chunks. One long historic trend for the total global population that goes back all the way to 10,000 BC. And the second chunk is country estimates that only reaches back to 1800. In this spreadsheet we present population data for the period 1800-2100. We use UN population data between 1950 to 2100 from UN Population Division World Population Prospects 2017 and the forecast to year 2100 is using their medium fertility variant. For years before 1950, this version uses the data documented in greater detail by Mattias Lindgren in version 3 . The main source was Angus Maddison’s data which is maintained and improved by CLIO Infra Project.
When combining version 3 with the new UN data, the trends for a few countries didn’t match up in the overlapping year 1950, and small adjustments were made to the years before and after to smooth out the discrepancy between the two sources to avoid sudden jumps in our visualisations.Below there is a link to documentation with detailed methodology used and and the data for back to 10,000BC.

For developersIf you like the data we use into your own products, it's better if you fetch data from our standardized gitHub repo on https://open-numbers.github.io
These spreadsheets are part of Gapminder's data compilation process and allow end users to track how we combine data.
