<Embed Image 1 Bitmoji Welcome.png here>
Before we dive into this mini-course, let me first introduce myself as your instructor. My name is Dr. Rachel Johnson (most of my students refer to me as Dr. J though!) and I am currently the Head of Science and Information Technology at White Oaks Secondary School in the Halton District School Board. I have my Ph.D. in Biochemistry (hence the Dr.) and I have been teaching science and math at the high school and university levels for the past 12 years. I went to the University of Toronto for both my undergraduate and graduate degrees and I started my M.Ed. degree in 2016 at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (which equates to many, many years spent studying!).

2About This Course20 minCourse Description
Welcome to Chemistry Bootcamp! Chemistry is the study of matter, its properties, and its changes or transformations. Learning chemistry is similar to learning a second language; it’s important to develop a strong fluency in the language of chemical nomenclature and equations in order to converse with scientists from around the world. The purpose of this mini-course is to provide you with a solid review of the fundamental skills needed to have a successful semester in chemistry. This mini-course will focus on nomenclature, balancing equations, types of reactions, significant digits, chemical calculations, stoichiometry, and safety in the chemistry laboratory. It will be conducted entirely online, using a variety of asynchronous technologies allowing you to progress in a self-paced manner.
Full Course Outline <embed full course outline hyperlink here>

Course Design
This mini-course is comprised of six asynchronous online modules. Each module should take approximately two hours to complete. We will also be using the Canvas Open Learning Management System (LMS) as our main course website for this mini-course. You can self-enroll in the course website at https://canvas.instructure.com/enroll/ADXW7H <embed hyperlink here>

Before You Begin the Course
Please complete the short All About Me Survey <embed hyperlink to Google Forms Survey here> so that I can get to know you a bit better as a learner.

3Assignments Overview10 minEvaluations
You will be evaluated based on the following assignments/quizzes:
Assignment #1 - Nomenclature Mindmap - 20%
Assignment #2 - To be developed - 30%
Quiz #1 - Chemical Nomenclature - 20%
Quiz #2 - To be developed - 20%
Assignment #3 - Participation and Collaboration - 10%

Assignment Descriptions
Assignment #1 - Nomenclature Mindmap
You will prepare a mindmap that includes all of the chemical nomenclature rules you've reviewed (binary ionic compounds (simple and multivalent), tertiary ionic compounds, covalent compounds (using greek prefixes), acids (binary and oxyacids), bases and peroxides). Your finished mindmap will be shared with the class on our discussion forum (20%).
