|Animation, Flash, and what that all looks like now in this golden age of animated television:|
|Lots of brand confusion around what Adobe is doing with Flash these days. Flash has always been a leading animation tool, and at it's peak, was behind many mainstream animation projects. |
(Bob's Burgers launched using it. Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, Archer, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, Bojack Horseman, etc.)
Then there was the other side of flash: The programatic side. That's what is getting shut down, and Adobe Flash for animation still persists as the rebranded "Adobe Animate." But who's using it? Less than Adobe would like.
That mess opened the door for the competition:
|- Toon Boom by Harmony (Spongebob, now Bob's Burgers, Rick and Morty, The Simpsons, Family Guy, now Archer, and even Clone Wars.)|
Combines 2D animation techniques with 3D and other styles. $456.00 annually. (great student rates though)
- Anime Studio Pro (Moho)
Starting to be in feature parity with Toon Boom for a lot less money: $400 total. (not annually)
- Toonz (or now OpenToonz), used by Futurama and Studio Ghibli, this one JUST went open source in 2016. Dubbed “Toonz Ghibli Edition”. This is production grade stuff that's 100% free. Definitely worth looking at.
|If stop motion is your game, the only game in town really is Dragonframe. Laika and Aardman use it and they are the monsters in the field. |
3D mentions: Maya ($1500 per year) is still the industry standard, and is what Southpark uses now, despite it being a mostly 2D production.
Blender is still a strong argument, and is free and opensource. Not up to Maya's standards, but still filled with features.
Note: If you are looking for work as an amimator, especially character animation, Maya is your way in. From Pixar to Blizzard to Monday Night Football...Maya is the photoshop of the 3D animation world.
|Fun Fact: South Park - When the show began using computers, the cardboard cutouts were scanned and re-drawn with CorelDRAW, then imported into PowerAnimator, which was used with SGI workstations to animate the characters. The workstations were linked to a 54-processor render farm that could render 10 to 15 shots an hour.|
Beginning with season five, the animators began using Maya instead of PowerAnimator. The studio now runs a 120-processor render farm that can produce 30 or more shots an hour.

|t||Joe the pilot wrote in regarding Chris Christensen’s tehc in travel minute on the pilot shortage. Long story short, Joe says “The truth is the shortage isn't truely here yet. There's just a shortage of pilots willing to work for 20k a year like a dog with nothing to show for it when many places start you at 60k and are happy to have you. There is no shortage at the Southwest Airlines and Delta Airline.” |
And I loved Joe’s analogy:
I tell ya Tom, there's a serious shortage of people willing give me an hour long massage for 20bucks. I asked every neighbor kid if they'd mow my lawn for 10 bucks a month, would you believe no one took my money? Theres an effing shortage Tom, i need computer operated lawn mowers so i can remove the kid.
Wait you're saying that's not free technology? Maybe I'll just set the yard on fire once every 2 weeks. And I'll blame the house burning down on those greedy neighbor kids.
|s||Mike writes "I forwarded the part of Monday's episode about organs and car fatalities to my wife. She had this comment.|
Listened to the podcast you sent...was a little (maybe a lot) frustrated by the 'sign up to be an organ donor you do it when you get your drivers license' - a big problem is that only tells them to preserve the organs...your next of kin ultimately has to ok the actual donation (and this step is where there is a ton of drop off) - they should say make sure your family knows you truly want to be a donor!!!!!"
