|A leaked letter from the UK’s National Data Guardian, Dame Fiona Caldicott to Professor Stephen Powis, the medical director of the Royal Free Hospital in London, says the Alphabet’s DeepMind’s deal with the National Health Service has an “inappropriate legal basis.” Sky News obtained the letter which advises an ongoing investigation into the deal by the Information Commissioner’s Office. The question is whether DeepMind had the right to handle personally identifiable health data of 1.6 million patients without receiving individual permission. DeepMind argues it was providing direct care which does not require such permission. DeepMind used it to train a medical app called Streams being built for the NHS, which now helps doctors identify patients at risk from Acute Kidney Injury.||https://www.theverge.com/2017/5/16/15645832/google-deepmind-nhs-patient-data-deal-ndg-letter|
