10 | Also, this information is being compiled to support organizers first and foremost. Some organizers have indicated that donating to prominent, national civil rights organizations in hopes that their resources will "trickle down" to people on the ground is unhelpful. For this reason, I've tried my hardest to limit the organizations I list to local chapters of nat'l organizations, community bail funds, mutual aid and community-controlled projects. |

7 | IF YOU ARE DETAINED: 1. Remain calm. Avoid antagonisms, or any conduct that will be construed as antagonistic. Police will assault you with impunity and allege they responded to a threat of immediate harm. 2. Ask “Am I being detained, or am I free to go?” This is how you will know whether you are being detained in such a manner that requires a reading of your Miranda Rights. 3. Remember that you have the right to remain silent and to ask for a lawyer immediately. When in doubt, shut your mouth. Anything and everything will be used against you. 4. You do not have to answer any questions or explain your actions to a police officer. You must, however, explicitly invoke your rights: "I am exercising my right to remain silent/right to council/right to refuse to be searched." 5. If you cannot afford a lawyer, you have the right to free legal counsel. Remain quiet no matter what the police say to you and do not sign anything or make any decisions without a lawyer present. 6. Courts have upheld that cops are able to say just about anything to a detainee in questioning to get answers or information from them. This includes lying (for example, “your friend we arrested already told us you did XYZ”). Do. Not. Engage. 7. You have the right to a phone call (usually local); if this is to your lawyer, the police cannot listen in on it. However, this is not true for calls made to anyone else.

7 | IF YOU ARE DETAINED: (Note: This does not susbtitute for legal advice! This is a compilation of publicly-available information from people working in legal services and more experienced protesters. 1. 3. 13 | MEDICAL SUPPORT & SANTITATION/PPE INFORMATION:
14 | Sanitation Protocol for Direct Action During Covid-19 (Adapted from QueerCare*) -- This document offers precautions you can take before, duing, and after attending a protest.
15 | Do not attend any gatherings if you feel ill. When possible, self-quarantine for a minimum of 14 days following the action. If available to you, get tested for COVID-19 a minimum of 5 days after the action.
16 | In this Twitter thread, Da'Shaun Harrison offers a reminder about maintaining one's respiratory health due to the irreparable harm Covid-19 does to your upper respiratory system.
17 | In this Twitter thread, the author of "Riot Medicine" offers the first edition of the text (for free!!) to aid "street medics in the struggle for liberation, autonomy, and dignity".
18 | If you are protesting while seated and someone begins to attack you, cover the back of your neck and your lower back with your arms.
19 | It is best to avoid wearing your contacts at protests, even when you have protective eye wear! (It's safe to wear contacts with protective gear, but it is easy for gear to be broken or removed from you during arrest!)
20 | Write out your ICE (in case of emergency) contact and include notes about required medication or medical problems. Phone numbers of doctors are not a bad idea either.
21 | It is best not to bring prescription medications to the protests. If you do, you’re encouraged to bring the bottle containing your prescription. Police are likely to give you a hard time, but it’s safer to have the bottle your meds came in.
22 | |||||||||||||||||||
23 | POLICING AND SURVEILLANCE:
24 | Avoid posting and resharing photos that could help the State, white supremacist groups, and employers identify the people protesting antiBlack racism. When possible, blur other people’s faces, tattoos, or other identifiable attributes.
25 | If you do not know how to blur images, this is a brief educational resource on how to do so.
26 | Do not seek to identify the people protesting antiBlack racism, or collaborate with elected officials to identify them. In New York, organizers report being questioned about their support of anti-facism. This is violative of their rights. More here.
27 | Sew or use safety pins to close up open pockets. When possible, do not carry easy to open bags. Police often plant illegal items on protesters so that they can justify arresting them.
28 | For People Visible in Local Organizing: Here is a Twitter thread on deleting your digital footprint. Do not post excessively about what you’re wearing, who you’re going with, etc. to avoid drawing additional attention to yourself.
29 | Many people have recommended using ‘Signal’ to communicate with your comrades. It is more secure than your DMs on Twitter or IG.
30 | This Twitter thread contains "bare minimum stuff" to make your phone and other devices more secure.
31 | The best policy is to watch what you text and to make sure you’re not including your location in any of your social media posts. Turn off your location, espexialy if you travel with many visible, local organizers.
32 | |||||||||||||||||||
33 | This Tweet contains a video that teaches you to set up an iPhone Shortcut to automatically begin recording your police interactions and inform your emergency contact that you're in an interaction involving police.

36 | This Instagram post contains advice on protest signage from an artist.

38 | |||||||||||||||||||
39 | EFFECTIVE SOCIAL MEDIA USAGE DURING PERIODS OF CIVIL UNREST:
40 | Be smart about the social media debates you take on. Facebook fights may not be the way to go! It's a super consistent energy suck. Donate your time to movement work (protests, donating, political education).
41 | |||||||||||||||||||
42 | |||||||||||||||||||
43 | Do not share videos and photos of the murder of George Floyd or any other Black person who has been murdered police - or anyone for that matter! These videos are the lynching postcards of our time.
44 | |||||||||||||||||||
45 | Do the work to unlearn and to fight all of your racist conditioning re: innocence and criminality.
46 | |||||||||||||||||||
