Virtual Student Matinee Series: A Kids' Play About Racism
A Kids Play About Racism is based on the book A Kids Book About Racism, by Jelani Memory, and is an online performance, geared for Grades K-5, that explains what racism is, how to know it when you see and experience it, and ideas for what you can do about it. The play was produced for the public at the beginning of August and received such a positive response that we wanted to share with our educator community. Getting access to our virtual student matinee is easy! Follow this link and fill out the form to bring A Kids Play About Racism into your classroom! We are thrilled to provide this program completely free of charge, made possible through the support of generous funders. We want to share how students are impacted by the work with our supporters. Please take a moment to share with us student quotes, art, and activities related to A Kids Play About Racism. Anything and everything will help us continue our programming. You can email your students’ reactions to us at education@orpheum-memphis.com with the words “AKPAR Student Reactions” in the subject. Educators who are interested in this play will receive an Active Educational Audience Guide with post-show activities and tools for Grades K-5. These tools will help facilitate and continue the conversation around racism in the classroom, provide tips on how to take action, and offer ideas for your own curriculum surrounding the topic of racism.

ACTivating Emotions: Social-Emotional Learning, Literacy, and Theatre
How do we give students permission to feel? In a moment of unprecedented stress and anxiety, young people need tools to name, express, and regulate complex emotions and feelings. Actors are experts at using the tools of body, voice, and imagination to walk in a character's shoes and express emotions. Infusing literacy standards and texts currently being studied in your classroom, an OTG teaching artist will guide students through building an emotion vocabulary, telling stories to understand emotional responses, and standing in a characters’ shoes to imagine the causes behind feelings and reactions.
