The trek was awesome...thank you for assigning us (freshers) with experienced trekkers...the challenges faced were easily overcome by us because of theit helpFirst point, instead of the steep climb. you should have taken the ridge line and continued to the point. would have saved you lots of energy. second point was on a side stream, the ascent and descent was unnecessary. For the third point, you could have used the dry stream still further up and reached the point. Good climbs and kudos for completing. Need to get used to valleys that includes streams with water, side streams and dry streams. Should work on ridge selection. The boot camp 2016 gave us a really good adventures and we got to learn a lot of new good things. The step by step assignments were great in helping us understand everything properly

Navigating in the order of waypoint 2, 1 and 3 would have saved a lot of distance and time.

We also climbed a peak unnecessarily close to the base camp. Thorns were an issue near the second waypoint. We didnt have to carry plenty of water as the streams were full. I am guessing we were lucky as the summer had ended.
Don't see any waypoints.Lot of climbs from your elevation profile report. Good to see you realized about your first climb. apart from that your climbs were good. Good job.It was fun :)

Being amateurs , the trail seemed very hard. Especially in few places it diverted into two paths and we didn't know which one to take. While planning to go to A4 thought to climb through the small valley we found in map, but practically when we saw there were only tall cliffs along the stream and was not able to find any trail to lead us there.
the base camp felt too long for our fitness level. Literally for few of us legs were shaking. It felt almost impossible to cover B2 or C1.
In a place where there is a large pool, We didnt know how to travel through the stream. We had to climb a small mountain nearby to go around, in both directions. Fortunately fellow teams helped us since we were new.
Trekking in a new place for first time without any guidance seemed tough. With a little improved fitness level we could have performed little better.
Could not find waypoints. Elevation profile missing. Basecamp and return. Try identifying the ridge lines and valleys for corresponding points and your job becomes more easier. Once you identify these two, you could choose the easier one depending upon the contour lines steepness, topo map, choosing side stream wisely. The difficulty level of assignments took an exponential curve from assignment 7 to assignment 8 to great difficulty.
In practical assignments didnt know if there is permission to visit that particular place. Example, the forest near medavakkam. For assignment 7 we decided to climb a mountain seeing vegetation less in google earth. But in real it was covered with thorn trees. (near senneri) so we took a climb in Pallavaram.
In assignment 8, for novice people if there were only A and B points that would have been better and we would have had a chance to compete.
Peer pressure of competing with experienced teams was definitely there!
But overall learnt a lot of things. Did a lot of things that we would have never dreamed. Organizing was great and people were friendly and welcoming, both volunteers and other team members.

The assignment given was in a challenging sequence, which took us two days to complete all three points. Point A2 was a valley along the stream, B6 was a beautiful peak which took us through few hard climbs. C2 was very long and challenging as water became scarce. Should have carried more than two liter. This point had little existing trails and had to find new way to reach. but managed to conquer it.Excellent !! Good identification and selection of ridge line. Overall it was a very nice experience exploring and learning about navigating with help of compass, maps, contour lines etc. It gave us a insight of trekking with enough knowledge. All the previous assignment helped us to do the Final assignment successfully. Only concern we had during assignment 8 is when the crowd is huge, people were fighting for flat rocks to sleep. too congested that ppl were rolling on each other. but that is all part of the play. Had very fun time adventuring. Thanks to CTC team.

It was a wonderful experience. Learned a lot.

Due to technical reason ( Mobile got repaired) we are not able to track the whole assignment in single mobile. It was done in two mobile (cant able to attach 2 files for each segment, hence adding the 2nd link below ).

We have completed 2 way points, missed the final one ;-(

Challenges faced :
Missing the direction
Going along stream will not help you always, we would be blocked by a sudden wall or falls
Optimizations:
We should analyze the entire mountain range and uploading some trails files (from google earth- eg. tails of all the streams) to oruxmaps. so that if we lost somewhere we can come back to track with help of tracked route and our loaded trail(KML file).
Have to Improve little more on Planning.
Good job. The first two points are correct, your elevation profile shows a gradual climb , good selection of ridges. Third waypoint not completed. Need to know about the valleys without water (side/dry streams)All the 8 assignments was nice. Learned a lot in 2months. Not able to complete the 3rd point in the boot camp due to low battery on mobile. But overall it was a wonderful experience .
So many thanks for Chennai trekking club and team.

My given co ordinates are A6,B2,C4.. In that A6 is quite difficult to reach co ordinate. we tried from two sides of the hill but we couldn't..Other than two co ordinates are reached with great experience.. And one impartant thing as discussed in mail.. My oruxmap tracelogs are not saved in backend server without notifications popup.. so as Peter suggested i drawn the trail in gooleMymap as i remembered... And pl suggest all navigators not use "Clean master" app in their andriod mobile.. This suggestion i got from Oruxmap developing team from Email conversation.Suggestion Noted. For A6 , Yes both sides are steep, but you should go back and take the ridge line next to A4 keep climbing and just go on 300m line to reach A6. Few teams have done that. This is where your ridge and contour maps assignment comes into play. Ridge selection is important. B2 is easy. C4 is correct Good job.Overall this bootcamp given the confident to me to go anywhere with proper planning and i would like to share one suggestion.. You can add one more theory assignment about "Oruxmap" application that how we can efficiently use this app... thank you

Excellent !! very good analysis. C4 is still up , the point marked is C1. so need to do C4 ;-)

+ve :
Thanks Peter! It was an awesome experience!
Learned to use Topo map effectively.

-Ve:
We felt like test could be conducted in the place where there is no/few treks arranged before by CTC. We felt like it was easy for people who explored nagala east and tough for others.

1. We realized A3 is straightforward after successfully tracing it. We missed to notice a trail near magic pool which goes east but proceeded towards A2 waypoint. We wasted more than an hour as we had to detour from A2 and trace another pre-existing trail to reach A3.
a. Lesson - Study the ridge using contour and watch out for the trail
b. Challenges – No big challenge. Gradual climb from 170m to 285m

2. B5 way point – arguably one of the toughest waypoints considering we had to come down a long way after A3. There is no pre-existing trail. We managed to find a comparatively easier valley to climb up and finish B5.
a. Lesson - All the mountain need not have a pre-existing trail
b. Challenge –Hydration, Thorny-bushy-Steep climb: 125m to 215m

3. C4 way point – This has given us one of the best trekking experiences. Smooth gradual climb through the ridge from magic pool 180m to 375m. We had to climb down from 395m to 345m to catch the valley and climb up again gradually up to 410m to conquer C4.
a. Lesson - We should trekked through waypoints A1, C1 to reach C4 by getting down to the valley after crossing the ridge from Magic pool
b. Challenge – Steep climb: 125m to 215m, Hydration, lot of surprises in the dry stream which took us to Deadend pool ;-)

4. Managed to touch A1, A2, A3, C1, C2, C4 waypoints during the trek
Excellent job. Excellent analysis. Good to see you have covered most of the waypoints as well. Improve ridge line selection. Thanks Peter for providing us a challenging trail. This has helped us to understand our strength and gave us confidence to do more. We also would like to thank all the CTC volunteers, Organizing team for this bootcamp for providing the constructive feedbacks and suggestions on all the assignments.

We would like to support or volunteer for the next month bootcamp exercise. Please do call us. Thanks again.

1. We started navigating from the right of the river and was always trying not to cross it. This assumption was wrong and as required we may have to switch between trails to come back to the main trail path.
2. It was assumed that there is no trails avilable for the assigned destinations, so we were trying to find our own way to the destinations. Actually a little bit of survery around the point of ascend/descend is important as we may get a easy/existing path, which will help us reach the destinations faster.
3. Pre-analysis of the area is important as this will give little in-sight into the area. As were coming here for the first time, it was all new and end up in many surprises.
4. The GPS devices [mobile phone] wasn't accurate in some places and hence it confused us some times. It was better for us to navigate using the co-ordinates as it was more accurate.
5. The OruxMaps had "MapMode" option, which we werent aware, later gave us the direction we are moving. This helped us in the second day navigation.
Good climbs. Good analysis. Suggestion Noted. The assigned waypoints werent of much significant or exiting. Thugh it was exiting to reach the place, nothing significant made it little boring.
The teams were allowed to come little late even till 8pm. We feel this should be little strict to be allowed only before dark, as chances of people getting lost and getting back is tough in night.

Challenges:
Point A6 - This was challenging because we missed the trail initially. After reaching, the descent was very hard because it was steep and there were lose rocks everywhere. This costed us time. The GPS map that was sent before the event began, didn't reach all teams. The terrain map that was given as a printout tore very soon and could not be used.
Point B4 - No challenges
Point P2 - No challenges

Optimization:
Instead of following open street maps, we could have used topo map, which would have helped us reach faster and easier.
Only topo map allows you to understand contours and terrain not OSM. For A6 , Yes both sides are steep, but you should go back and take the ridge line next to A4 keep climbing and just go on 300m line to reach A6. Few teams have done that. This is where your ridge and contour maps assignment comes into play. Ridge selection is important. Other two points are done correctly. Good.CTC Navigation bootcamp is a brilliant initiative for aspiring trekkers and explorers. Being a part of this was an absolute pleasure. We got to learn a great deal from this event. It was interesting, fascinating and useful. We convey our heartfelt gratitude to Peter and his team for selflessly putting so much effort into this and organising this for us. We look forward to participating in more such events.

The point is to identify the ridge line and stick to it.The bootcamp was both fun and educative. The theoretical and practical knowledge acquired by completing the assignments made us confident about map reading and navigating. We would definitely look for and join a second level of this course with more assignments, techniques and increased difficulty level.

Sharks team has planned the trial on offline map in base once the co-ordinates has been assigned.
Started moving towards the valley and found the stream to move to 1st point on peak. team struggled a little
since we have freshers but somehow they managed to climb by singing la laaaa la...la laaaa la....
Team has keep moving on the same pace throughout the 1st day and we have planned to complete 3 points on
the same day. we have reached our 3rd point by evening 6 & started moving towards the picnic pool. Mannichu peter
for not coming to basecamp. But as alone and words from guru (peter), we made a camp in a safe place near picnic pool by 9 p.m.
Excellent !! Good identification and selection of ridge line. Team communication, supportive to one another. New experience to everyone to explore individually and learn to overcome the hard situations. Thanks to Peter (mams) & Organisers who has motivated us from the beginning. Sure peter we will navigate in all terrain & survive in any situation. Sharks moves into toughest . Breaks the toughest.

Field Navigation was bit challenging and able to cope up to complete the assignment successfully well ahead of planned time. Still needs lots of hands on experience to become self sufficient. Elevation profile not clear. Could have uploaded a much clear trail with WP's, athough it is good. Need to include extra one set of field assignment before encountering the final assignment.
