JOTTINGS FOR MEMBERS
75
76
Llanelli Amateur Athletic Club was founded by Paul Oram in 1978 following a public meeting
77
organised by Don Roberts and the Brin Isaac Committee, which has over the years
78
fostered virtually all forms of sporting endeavour in Llanelli through the medium of annual awards.
79
80
Don Roberts went on to become the Club's first President, and the Junior Athlete of the Year trophy bears his name.
81
82
Paul Oram went on for many years to become the leading coach in the Club, and for middle distance running in Wales.
83
84
More recently, Matthew Kelly was a talented junior discus and hammer thrower holding junior club records. When he was tragically killed, his parents
85
chose to commemorate his enjoyment of sport and his achievements through an annual prestigious award, the Matthew Kelly Field Athlete of the Year Award.
86
87
In the 1980's and 1990's the Club enjoyed considerable success at senior National and International levels. This was despite
88
not having any all weather track facilities in Llanelli. Training was often in and around Llanelli and at Pembrey Country Park.
89
A regular mid week club meet was based at Lakefield Rd Hall, consisting of intervals around town followed by stretching,
90
tea was served afterwards thanks to Pete Small's wife Hilary.
91
92
Club Officials lobbied and worked with the Council to provide an all-weather track ( limited lanes) at Stebonheath.
93
This became the Clubs home between 1989 and 2010.
94
95
The Club then worked with the Council and helped secure a new 6 lane track for the community at Pemberton Parc y Scarlets in 2010.
96
In those days, Scarlet players like Phil Bennet also use to benefit and enjoy summer time fitness training with our Club athletes.
97
98
Today the Club has a growing Junior section supported by a team of talented and dedicated coaches led by Chris Franklin.
99
The juniors are continually setting new records and the Club is once again enjoying National and International success.
