Waste & Recycling Performance Calculator | Offices
3
Version 2.2 - June 2023
4
Introduction
5
The Office Waste and Recycling Performance Calculator allows office staff, facilities managers or people in similar roles to measure their waste and resource management performance.

The tool can estimate total waste generation volumes, reuse levels, recycling levels, and waste management collection service costs. Understanding your current performance can help you to develop action plans and targets, report against climate change and other goals.
6
What you need to get started
7
This tool is designed for shared office spaces where a single invoice is provided for the whole building. There are two ways the invoices can be used, depending on what information they contain:
1) Estimate a year's worth of waste and recycling performance (this requires at least one invoice that is representative of a typical month that shows the waste and recycling streams, number of bins and how often they are collected).
2) Use actual data of the weight of materials from all the invoices across the year.

Cost information can also be used in this tool (e.g. cost per bin collection).

Some recycling streams may be managed informally by staff, like drop-off of batteries. These details can be entered by estimating the size of the bin/container and how often they are managed.
8
Using the calculator
9
1) Review details
These details must be provided to allow automatic calculations on the Enter Data tabs.

2a) Enter Data - Estimated volumes
Use this tab for waste and recycling streams where you do not receive any data on the weight of material that is collected.
• If you are unsure about the size of your bins, please refer to the 'Bin Size Guide' tab for help.
• If your site has specialist waste streams, you may need to enter additional data about those waste streams. This can be done via the custom waste and recycling stream section below the data entry table. Once the custom stream is entered it will appear in the data entry table and will require you to fill in the remaining information.

2b) Enter Data - Actual weight
Use this tab for waste and recycling streams where you have information on weight of material collected. Either add data for each month or estimate the average monthly totals based on a representative invoice.

3) A report will be generated summarising the organisation's site performance - see 'Waste Report' tab. It will combine data entered in 2a and 2b.

This Calculator can be used multiple times. Simply
'Save As' and enter new data for the desired period or a different site.
10
Data accuracy
11
The accuracy of the results depend on the quality of the information input into the calculator. Where possible, gather data from your waste services provider. The building/maintenance manager may need to provide this.

Waste generation tonnes are based on average material density factors common in the waste and recycling industry. These may differ from your business's actual generation rate if you receive information on the tonnes of material you generate. Your collection contractor may also provide conversion factors in the invoice and they can be entered using the custom waste and recycling stream section.
